COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Big Rock is pleased to bring you our newest addition to the family, PALE: India Pale Ale. Historically, the original India Pale Aleís were cask conditioned and heavily hopped to allow the beer to mature on its long voyage from Britain to India. Our dry hopped, fermenter conditioned IPA is brewed in this traditional method. The result is an exceptionally well-balanced, flavourful ale; refined and subtle. In the spirit of refreshing our portfolio, we bid a fond farewell as we phase out Chinook Pale Ale.

Diapery aroma? -Hmm I never thought of a beer smelling that way, but it may be a good description. I knew there was something off about this one, and Oakes (5028) hit the nail on the head. Other than the smell, it is a fairly good beer to have in the fridge.

Light bronze colour. Toasty, sulphury and fucking awful diapery aroma. Big Rock is not known for lack of brewing talent but this aroma is flawed. Flavour has residuals of this, but in the background. What you mostly get is the toast...lots of it...like a toasty bagel with butter. But not a real bagel. Like a Tim Hortonís imitation bagel. And itís margarine, not butter. I happen to like toasted bagels with butter so itís cool, well as long as I plug my nose, but itís not a good beer. Seriously, Iím not trying to pick on Big Rock, but I just had a Hacker Hell and it terms of malt character, hop character, cleanliness, itís a professional beer. This is not.

Seems theyíve dropped the India and itís just Pale Ale now... Bottle: Medium gold pour with a creamy white head and plenty of visible carbonation streamers. Aroma is low hop, earthy wet wool yeasty. Flavour is thin and clean with the carbonation a bit too much that it overwhelms the flavour. Not crazy about this one...

341ml brown bottle. Deep gold colour, very creamy head, tight bubbled, with sticky lace. Slightly floral hop aroma with some sweetish fruity malt behind it. Malty flavour, slightly earthy. Bitterness very light toward finish. Lively carbonation. Perhaps labeling this as an IPA is a bit of a stretch, but I liked it.

341 ml bottle. Golden amber colour with a mostly diminishing fizzy and frothy off-white head. Caramel, bready, and lightly grainy aroma. Toasty and light caramel flavours with a light citrusy bitter finish. Light to medium bodied, dry and fizzy mouthfeel. No IPA, but the first from Big Rock Iíve had that didnít completely suck.

Pours a light amber with a white head. mild aroma of floral hops, grassy. The taste is far from what I associate with an I.P.A. Little or no hops, some malt, grassy, thin. If youíre looking for an I.P.A. skip this one.

Bottle. Gold color with nary much of a head to speak of. Aroma is dusty with some malts and caramel. Taste is a strange honey flavor and hops. I had this side by side with Widmer and that blew this stuff away.

Ech. Not truly terrible, but Jesus, it was so bland. So, so offensively bland. Iím sorry, but IPAs are supposed to be dark and taste of hops and bitterness, NOT be a lager in a different bottle. Boring stuff, no inspiration. An insult to IPAs.

Found in the bargain bin at the LCBO. Pours a clear light copper colour with a medium bubbly head. Aroma is kinda grassy, malt and a bit of hop. Sweet caramel taste wiith citrus. Not what I’d call an IPA, too thin of a body also. Overall, not bad but nothing I’d want to rush out and get

Sent as a part of BIF 13 (from hell) package by drewbage, this had the potential of being a decent brew, as I generally like the style. The beer poured with classic IPA look, orange amber body, and a creamy off-white head leaving lots of lace. The aroma was very subdued, with earthy English hops, and light notes of alcohol. The taste was very bland, with a caramel sweetness, hop bitterness, and citrus twang in very light proportions. The mouthfeel was crisp and dry. This appears to be representative of the school of thought, that IPAs were traditionally brewed extra strong for the ocean voyage and diluted after getting to India. This pretty much tastes like an American Double IPA mixed with equal parts water. I prefer for them to hold the water and pass the beer to me straight from the ship.
