Big Rock Rauchbier (Kaspar Shultz Line)

The pour is a clear, bright amber body with a thin cap of beige head. Some light spotty lacing, no carbonation. The nose has a nice medium smoke with woody notes and a caramel malt. Doesn’t smell as big as a Rauchbier. The taste is somewhat light with a medium body and a sizeable smoke note. Caramel and toasty malts with sweetness and a light grassy hop. Overall, this is a good offering from Big Rock, but not the greatest smoked beer around.

Draft at the brewery. Pours clear tawny, with a light copper hue, thin pale tan/off-white head, lacing is spotty to poor. Nose is moderately full bacony smoke, very much in the Bamburg tradition, some nice caramel/toffee notes in the nose here too, rather smells like a Smoked Marzen. Smoke notes are not as pronounced as in a true Rauchbier, but are well-done nonetheless. Flavours of bacon/ham, smoke, toffee, very soft, drinkable, and approachable. Much less timid than I had feared. Also much better than Alley Kat’s Smoked Porter. All in all, a soft, sessionable, moderately smoky brew that I would be happy to have a few pints of anytime.
