3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
2014 Advent Calendar #12, 355ml, no bottle date or best before.
Pours clear deep amber with one finger of loose light tan head diminishing rapidly to a thin skim, minimal patchy lacing. (4/5) Nose is dark boozy fruit, brown sugar, slight chocolate and roasty grain. (8/10) Taste is moderate sweet, mild bitter, mild alcohol. (7/10) Medium body, prickly to moderate carbonation, sticky boozy mild bitter finish. (3/5)
Overall an enjoyable BSDA, tending towards abt/quad in the flavouring, but a little light in the body. I found the carbonation to be not-unpleasant prickly to moderate, but it tended to lift the body even further. Given the big flavours and big (though very polite) ABV, this beer might’ve been better implemented with a heavier body. Definitely a solid performer, though, and stylistically quite in keeping with the Advent calendar theme. (15/20)

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
330ml bottle pours black in color with a 2 finger white head that leaves very little lacing behind. Aroma is dates or raisins with some chocolate and light roasted grains. Taste is a dark fruit and chocolate malty sweetness with a light hop bitterness and finishing with mild alcohol on the tongue. A little light in body for the style and lightly carbonated. Would be better if there was more substance.

3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle. Dark brown with a finger of white creamy head. Aroma is corn syrup, apricot, dates, and spices. Taste is mild spices, followed by sugary sweetness, dates, finish is mild spice and has a bit of heat, carbonation is high, mouthfeel is a bit thin for such a big beer. Really nice beer, lots of nice spice, perfect for a cold winter night.

750ml bottle #2037 of 3240, 2012 vintage, shared with Dave. Cloudy amber brown with golden highlights and a reluctant low head. Estery caramel, spicy, a tad musty, low carbonation. I don’t think this bottle aged well, despite having been stored properly.

Full-bodied with flavors of sweet malt, banana, cloves and yeast. The finish is sweet with a spice and fruit aftertaste. Decent overall.

2012 Vintage // Bottle 1126 of 3240:
Rich brown coloured body with a nice copper tint and a very thin tan head, all on top of a beautiful ruby and violet tint when held up to a light. Aroma of alcohol, oak, vanilla, brown sugar, cognac, whiskey and the strongest bit - figs. Medium-bodied; Relatively thin (for the style) with a big caramelised sugar flavour of pit fruits, toffee and just plain brown sugar. Aftertaste shows a good balance of malt, oak, dryness and the sugars with no bitterness at all, just a hint of alcohol bite, but not like most in this style. Overall, a nice beer that tastes more of a dubbel than a quadruple - but good, not excellent. Missing a bit of the carbonation and deep complexity, but this was nice. I’m glad I drank this after only a single year of aging, i’m thinking that in another year’s time, there will be no flavours at all - just mellowness. I sampled this 75 cL bottle purchased exactly one year earlier at Bottleworks in Seattle, Washington [state] on 10-February-2013 for US$14.99 sampled at home in the real Washington on 10-February-2014.
Note that my bottle says 10% alcohol and is not the same as pictured - a different label and a caged top, not a swing top.
