Pours a really lovely crystal clear garnet, you can see right through this thing even though itís so red. very clean, neutral aroma, smells lightly of barley. light-side of medium body, smooth on the palate, not too bitter. flavors are biscuity and sweet but itís not cloying. Fairly neutral yeast character, there is a little something going on in the fruit department. Itís mild, almost like melon or kiwi. Big garnet kiwi. Further tasting is making me think this fruit is actually hop flavor, not yeast. Finishes with a lingering sweetness. Mr. Science says further analysis is required.

12 oz bottle, poured into a shaker pint at ~40 degrees F. Appearance: Pours a clear, if dark, garnet-ruby brown, where the shadows of oneís fingers are visible with no blurring on the other side of the glass. Forms a rather short-lived finger of beige head, which dies to a ring swiftly. Smell: Toffee-sprinkled dark bread, being eaten near a patch of damp clay that lends just a hint to the aroma. There are also faint suggestions of some old fig and black cherry. Taste: The flavors open with a mixture of an ashy-clay bitterness, sweet toffee, and dark bread, with the ashes and clay forming a sort of bedrock which underlays the remainder of the palate. Notes of tanned leather and fig waft through the sweetness, along with some hints of old, soft, damp wood. The finish leaves a lingering aftertaste of bitter clay, sweet toffee, and aged black cherry. Mouthfeel: Light and thin, this is a chuggable beer, not a sticky or creamy one. Overall: Iím not displeased with having picked up a sixer of this beer, but I donít know that itís a repeater for me. Between the thin mouthfeel and the, to me, somewhat heavy-handed approach to the earthy hops, Iíve had much better scotch ales.

Nice and heavy tasting Scotch Ale. Made for a craggy mountain man or woman to enjoy.

12 oz. bottle from Cash Wise in Watford. Appearance: slight white head, amber, slightly cloudy, Aroma: caramel, bits of medical aroma, light floral, earthiness, nutty, chocolate. Palate: medium body, soft carbonation, slightly oily texture, slight bitter finish. Taste: sweet molasses and earthy caramel, Earthiness grows with chocolate and nuttiness coming in as well, on into slight floral hops that cover the palate partially, but the earthiness lingers with nuttiness. Overall, super enjoyable, very smooth, very drinkable, matches the style well, solid beer.

More of a red ale than a scotch ale. Smooth but rather light on flavor or aroma. Just okay.

12oz pour from room-temperature bottle into tulip glass. Moderate light-tan head, mostly-opaque, dark brown to light black. Nose is malt and sugar. Mouthfeel is moderately creamy. Taste is lots of dry malts, a little nutty, and a little woody. Not as sweet as I expect, but tasty.

On tap clear red Amber, after the nitro settled up. Soft light malty aroma with a little earthy peatiness. Smooth a fairly light I thought even for the rather hefty ABV

Poured from bottle into a pint glass Appearance Ė The beer pours mahogany color with a one finger head of fizzy off-white foam. The head fades rather rapidly, leaving a decent sum of foamy lace on the sides of the glass. Smell Ė The aroma of the beer is very sweet with a ton of caramel, toffee, and some butterscotch. These sweet aromas are complimented by some lighter dark fruit smells of a cherry and plum nature as well as some bready aromas that has a lighter level of a toast smell mixed within. Overall the aroma is quite sweet and very inviting. Taste Ė The taste begins as the nose would have let on, with a good sum of a rather caramel and toffee sweetness. Some lighter dark fruit flavors of raisin are there as well, mixing with the slightly bready flavors of the brew nicely. As the taste advances the fruit fades a bit all while with the caramel taking on some more buttery tastes leaving the sweet to take a slightly more butterscotch flavor overall. All the while however, more roast comes to the tongue, which along with it, brings some molasses. A hint of an earthy hop hits the tongue at the very end, mixing with the slightly more roasted and sweet flavors of the brew nicely and leaving one with a quite pleasant flavor to linger on the tongue. Mouthfeel Ė The body of the beer is on the slightly thinner side for the 6.7 % abv. scotch ale with it containing a carbonation level that is rather average to a little bit higher. For the style I would have likes a slightly thicker body and bit of a lower carbonation to allow for a more sticky feel for the more sugary and slightly roasted flavors of the brew, but even with that said the feel was pretty good overall and it did make for a rather easy drinking style. Overall Ė A quite tasty scotch ale that isnít too overwhelming. The flavors and smell are fantastic but a little thicker of a body may have slightly more fitting. Overall though it was a rather good drinker.

2 finger lite tan head... good retention and great lacing... the brew is a polished deeeep amber. Nose shows good maltiness with pretty pronounced caramel... earthy... dark toast... Flavor is more rich than I was expecting from Big Sky (Iím not a Big Sky hater, itís just the truth)... good expected elements... rich malts... caramel combines well with some minor and hard to identify fruity esters (I will guess plummy?)... a bit of "black tea like" tannins on the finish that meshes well with the residual maltiness. Pretty standard body with a medium carbonation. Good.... pretty good... I always have a hard time with Scottish style beers and feel like I undervalue them, but this is pretty good and a nice contemplative sipper if you take your time on the glass.
