COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Big Sky Brewing’s Ivan the Terrible Imperial Stout is brewed according to the traditional style using English hops and the finest American malt. Its aroma and flavor balances well between esters of dried fruit and roasted cocoa with a slight bourbon presence. Ivan was aged for a minimum of three months in American oak Buffalo Trace Bourbon barrels.

Draft, Uber Tavern. Opaque with a mocha head. Mollases, alcohol, chocolate for the aroma. Taste is licorice, alcohol, whiskey, chocolate, toffee. Tons of depth to the taste of the beer.

Tap at Uber.

Well, they got that right. Terrible indeed.

Pours a burnt-coffee color, slightly thin, little head. Thea aroma is all vanilla bourbon, alcoholic and vaporous. The flavor is sour and a bit burnt; the bourbon is not integrated at all and clashes atop the other flavors (which,as best as I can tell, are not particularly special.) The body is thin and weak. This one is quite a disappointment.

Draft at PIB 2007: Pours black with a huge brown head. Aroma of malt sugars and roasted barley. Flavor is slightly sweet and malty with lots of chocalatey notes and some roasty and woody characteristics. Very subtle bourbon spices. Nice and balanced and not overpowering.

Tried at SIB. Really sweet. Really sweet. Yes, I wrote it twice in my notes...Lots of roast. Nutty; a little dark fruit; lots of bourbon. Good, but a bit too much bourbon and way too sweet.

Had this at the FOBAB 06, pour was dark brown bordering on black with a mediocre white head. Nose was big on bourbon as expected but a little over the top. Kind of hid the roasted malts, oak, chocolate and vanilla that come out a little more in the flavor. Wasnt my favorite at the festival, but was still solid.

UPDATED: OCT 23, 2010 From Skyview’s growler carried back from Montana. The aroma has malt and soy sauce. It is a very thick beer, heavy and slow pouring. Black and almost no carbonation. I was happy that there was no whisky flavor. Thick beer. Flavor has roasted malt, just a litlte smoke, more soy sauce, some alcohol and unprocessed grain. Not quite world class, but well done. 7/5/7/5/14 Rerate from a bottle. Big wine flavor, and light sourness in addition to the other flavors. Much better from the bottle.

Dark black in color thin head. The aroma was very strong woody and light with whiskey aroma and flavor. This had a deep wood flavor added to the stout. Tons of different flavors in this beer. I was however disappointed in this beer which it had ore whiskey flavor. Waited months to try this beer and was not what I was hoping. Hope to try next year and it has improved with flavor.

Another growler via Skyview. Aroma of bourbon and malts. Taste threw me off, I expected more bourbon in the flavor due to the nose, but it was mostly masked by a smooth chocolate and coffee taste. I really enjoyed this one. Thanks again Skyview!

Draft at SIB. Comments apply to the bourbon barrel aged version. Pours opaque black with a creamy tan head. Vanilla and oak aroma. Roasty espresso and pine dry finish. Lots of bourbon barrel in the taste - much too much. This beer should probably be cut 50/50 with the regular Ivan to calm it down.

Sampled at the Big Sky Brewing Company’s tap room in Missoula, Montana. Pours an opaque dark brown brew with a medium to thin tan head. Aroma of toasted malt, molasses, dark fruit (plums), and a touch of bourbon. Taste is full bodied, thick and oily with some soft carbonation. The finish has a high alcohol (10.9%) with a slight chocolate and flowery hop aftertaste. A growler was brought back to Minnesota for sharing.
