COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Big Sky Brewing’s Ivan the Terrible Imperial Stout is brewed according to the traditional style using English hops and the finest American malt. Its aroma and flavor balances well between esters of dried fruit and roasted cocoa with a slight bourbon presence. Ivan was aged for a minimum of three months in American oak Buffalo Trace Bourbon barrels.

750 bottle (2013) in Seattle. A great christmas present, very glad I got to finally try this. Black brown body with brown head. Leathery caramel, great rich molasses and soy. Coffee depth. Good medium weight. Alc has a nice bite this fresh. A bit of cola, herbs. Alc at end is a touch medicinal. Very happy with this. Will have squirrel away a few bottles, I bet this gets even better with a little patience.

Bottle sent to me by Prufrockstar - thanks Chris! Pour is dark black with zero head. Really nice bourbon nose. No lacing. Slight carbonation, but really fantastic taste. Big bourbon taste, thick mouthfeel - more of a liquor than a beer. Chocolate, tobacco and roasted malt. Sweet finish that gradually goes into a nice bourbon finish. This was really nice despite being almost totally flat.

Vintage 2010 A: pours a dark maduro brown. Nice, two finger latte head loosely disspates and leaves a thick sheet of the same. Beer has excellent clarity around edges, otherwise SRM’s prevent this. minimal lacing. S: The bourbon is both the hilight and beautifully subdued. Never experienced appropriately blended BBA like this. Malty, anise, bourbon, sweetness, molasses. Very nice. Very pleasing. T: This beer is fantastic fresh - I’ve had many BBA’s that need aging, and then peak out. I’m not so sure this beer should be aged. It’s great now, and struggle to see the Bourbon getting better. I think I prefer this to The Abyss. M: Velvet, with moderate carbonation. I do, however, tend to stir my glass so frequently, that the carbonation dies out quite a bit. Leaves the the mouth slick and appreciating the bourbon barrels even longer. D: This beer is outstanding. I can’t see the beer having better presence beyond being fresh. I have about a case sitting around the house - I’ve already traded too much of it away. This beer is outstanding. Serving type: bottle 02-25-2011

On tap at Barrels & Bottles. Black appearance with a brown head. Aroma and flavor of coffee, chocolate, roasted malts, dark fruits, vanilla and a touch of bourbon. Complex and sweet with light bitterness. Full body with a smooth, creamy feel and a tangy finish.

2013 bottle, 1506/3000. Smells like bourbon, with some espresso and chocolate in there. Deep and rich, pretty boozy, there’s definitely a burn. So good, but probably even better in a year or so.

Deep black core, light brown edges. Burnt malt nose, some coffee, trace of oak. Ashy, burnt malts, smooth though. Bourbon not very present, except perhaps a bit thin.

750ml, 2013. 2353 of 3000. 13.8%. Black pour, small tan head. Boozy malty chocolate bourbon nose, with a hint of cookie dough. With some fruit cake. Chocolate Bourbon Flavors, with a background of wood mixed with vanilla. Well balanced. Slight astringent finish with some bitter dark chocolate. Very good!

HIGHB4LL (482) - Fort Collins, Colorado, USA - DEC 7, 2013
750ml bottle. Appearance: Small head, black as black can be. Aroma: heavy malt, roasted, nutty, perfume, heavy alcohol, bourbon. Taste: long duration, lightly sweet, moderately acidic, lightly bitter, sour milk. Palate: medium body, alcoholic texture, soft carbonation, chalky finish. Overall, really like this beer. The ABV really shows through though.

From bottle. Very dark with just an inkling of tan head. Smells of dark fruit and booze. Taste similar. Way too sweet and way too boozy for me.
