COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Big Sky Brewing’s Ivan the Terrible Imperial Stout is brewed according to the traditional style using English hops and the finest American malt. Its aroma and flavor balances well between esters of dried fruit and roasted cocoa with a slight bourbon presence. Ivan was aged for a minimum of three months in American oak Buffalo Trace Bourbon barrels.

UPDATED: NOV 17, 2013 Bottle received in trade. Thank you KingCecil! Pours black with a rather small fizzy mocha head that quickly dissipates without leaving much trace on the glass. Smell is slightly sweet and malty with roasted malts, charred wood, oatmeal cookies, bitter chocolate, bourbon, vanilla fudge, pecan nuts, alcohol, coffee hard candy, toffee, sherry and hints of schwarzwald cake and burnt sugar. Taste is slightly sweet, bitter and malty with roasted malts, dark roast coffee, charred wood, sweet dark bread, bourbon, vanilla fudge, bitter chocolate, black pepper corns, sweet liquorice candy, sherry, mineral rich soil, St Johns wort, and hints of alcohol. Mouthfeel is round, tiny boozy, tiny roasted astringent and medium to full bodied. finish is bitter with roasted malts, bitter chocoalte, dark roast coffee, vanilla fudge, bourbon, mineral rich soil, biscuits, black pepper corns, alcohol and sherry. Balanced, "simple" and smart. Subtle barrel aging really suits the beer. Great stuff!

Tap pours dark brown black with khaki tan head. The aroma is rich roasted grains, a little coffee like with a light fruit and oak. The flavor starts thick and rich with a bittersweet roasted grain that has hints of dark fruit and earthy lightly hoppy herbal times with a nice oaky coffee thing in the finish. Gets smoother as it warms and really brings it all around, nice soothing warmth going down.

2012 bottle shared by Jeremy - Thanks! Pours dark cola color with minimal head. Aroma of chocolate, coffee, cinnamon. Taste: stale chocolate, some oxidation, bourbon and oak. Medium body, slick texture, soft carbonation. Following directly on the heels of Huna, this feels surprisingly thin. Overall: solid.

750mL 2010 ed thanks to MinorThreat! Clear, deep brown pour. Medium to low tan foam. Nose is metallic, olive. Taste is ashy, lemon, chalk. Finish is mild cardboard. Huh. Letting this one sit out some more.

Really nice lacing overall. Nose as it warms moves to marshmallow, milk chocolate, sugary dessert, nice bourbon barrel. Taste has some sweet grape, decent sugar, still a bit earthy/soil with heavy chalk in the palate. Lactic, tangy finish.
