COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Big Sky Brewing’s Ivan the Terrible Imperial Stout is brewed according to the traditional style using English hops and the finest American malt. Its aroma and flavor balances well between esters of dried fruit and roasted cocoa with a slight bourbon presence. Ivan was aged for a minimum of three months in American oak Buffalo Trace Bourbon barrels.

From notes. First reviewed 3/11/2011. 2010 release. Bottle 2569/3800. 750 mL bottle poured into a tulip. Thanks to readbaron for sharing this. Ivan pours almost black, with walnut brown edges. Thick and viscous, with a small mocha head that recedes to a thin cap. The aroma has bourbon, raisins, and figs, roasted malt, and a little bit of toffee, molasses, and peat. The malt flavor is definitely heavy here, with a surprisingly strong and noticeable peat flavor. Bourbon soaked raisins and figs combine with smooth toffee to provide a nice sweetness. A little bit of smoke and tobacco step in on the back end. Full bodied, with medium carbonation. A sticky residue is left after each sip, and it has a sort of buttery smoothness to it. A very enjoyable beer, it is a shame this is only released in small quantities.

Poured from the bomber it has an almost black color with a mocha head. The aroma has some chocolate and oak and some booze. Taste starts with a creamy texture of melted chocolate. There is also some roasted coffee notes and a touch of some bourbon. Very complex with other flavors like caramel and brown sugar. Excellent beer.

Black pour. Thinly tan head. Watery body Sweet syrupy nose. Notes of Roasted malts coffee and subtle hints of chocolate and dark fruit. Good for aging + blending. A good Imp. Stout and a solid base beer for experimentation.

2010 bottle/2012 drank. Kind of light body/pour and fizzy tan head. Very mild nose, touch of oak and bourbon and LOTS of dark fruit. Smells like fig/prune juice... Medium body and a touch of tannin.

Bomber. 2012 edition. Pours a deep, opaque, ’stouty’ blackish-brown, thin espresso colored head. Nose is malt, chocolate, dried fruit, bourbon barrel. Mouth is full bodied, lots of boozy character, cocoa, toffee, dates and raisins and bit warm at the back end. Pretty nice, but I’d take another bottle of Cherry BCS over this any day of the week.

Tap at Slows Bar BQ. Pours pitch black with a small head that fades quickly and collects at the edges. Good lacing too. Aroma is a fairly unique for this style. Lots of cocoa and fruity esters, hints of bourbon and roasted malt. Very sweet on the first sip but it doesn’t bother me here. Dark dried fruit mixed with sweet cocoa gives a surprisingly nice balance. The bourbon is there but very subtle. Finish is lingering cocoa and light bourbon. Medium body and pretty oily. This is really good stuff worth trying if you can. A unique take on the style here.
