COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Imagine a tango: a man and a woman dancing, their eyes locked upon one another, then take your first taste of Olde Bluechair, Big Sky Brewing Company’s Barley Wine. A taste of apricots, honey flavors, a sliver of vanilla, and a hint of caramel, round out the Barley Wine. Like so many things in life, Olde Bluehair just gets better with age.
Aged for a minimum of 3 months in American Oak Bourbon Barrels.

UPDATED: AUG 22, 2012 On draft at WOB Tempe, cloudy amber color, with some caramel and vanilla flavors. Much better than the first time I had it, it is tasty and malty with a little bit of dried fruit.

This barley wine was okay. The head is a little thin, but the flavor was decent. Doesn’t seem strong, which is nice. Nothing special.

Draft - Vintage 2012 - Toffee, wood notes, vanilla and a nice caramel sweetness. Clear copper with a rich beige head. Dark cherry, toffee and oak notes. Really nice.

In short: An over-carbonated woody barley wine with original flavors for the style. Decent but could have been very good with softer carbonation.
How: Bottle 750ml corked & caged (ratebeer pictue shows a capped bottle), consumed when many months of age, bottle sent to me by …. Savvy1982?.. by someone.
The look: Cloudy brown body topped by a large beige head with good retention.
In long: Opens to a very loud pop, no gushing. Nose has plenty of floral honey, toastiness, lots of plain wood (woodshed smell). The body is over-carbonated, something I rarely say about a barrel aged big beer, and that over-carbonation hides the corpulent richness of the body. Taste is a creamy mixture of floral honey and caramel, notes of light color fruits (peaches and pineapples mainly), a strong oak presence. A little sweet on the attack but the oak dries it out nicely and even adds a certain astringency. The floral honey and light color fruits flavors were unusual and a fun change for a BA barley wine. I think there is a good beer in there but the excessive carbonation of my bottle kind of screwed my palate perception of the beer. Another big bottle of strong beer I drank, every week-end I abuse alcohol, verbally, I call each beer a slutty bitch before I drink it.

Draught. Pours a hazy reddish amber color with a smallish off-white head on there. Nose has some caramel notes to it, as well as some slight grain elements. Taste is slightly sweet with definite caramel notes coming off it. Very smooth, though slightly heavy on the palate.

Draft pour. Pours a dark orange with a sweet, boozy aroma. Very sweet malt flavor with some citrus fruit and caramel. Pretty boozy this one is. Good flavor though, and a solid beer overall

2011 vintage bottle #560 of 3000. A great beer. It was good in 2011 but the years have made it better!

(2012 bottle from Sparky, thanks E!) Pours a hazy reddish orange color with a towering off-white colored head. Surprised by how much carb is here for a 2 yr. old bottle; the cork literally flew out of the bottle upon opening. Aromas here are a big bomb of brown sugar, light vanilla, wood, dried apricots, raisins, and a glimmer of strawberry jam. Not really picking up any oxidation or off-scents so I don’t think it’s infected, it’s just highly carbed. Getting a slight chocolate vibe after some warming which is strange. Flavor contains more prominent strawberry jam (there’s a slight tanginess here), vanilla, oak, little hint of char, brown sugar, and raisins. Little hint of red vines too in the far finish. Mouthfeel is lighter than expected and the carb is lower than expected. Overall a solid BA Barleywine. Thanks again E!

On tap at Global Brew. Pours a hazy orange with a decent thin small bead white head that coats the glass. Aroma is a container of mixed fruit and the syrup. Taste is sweet caramel malt, pineapple juice, buttery, boozy with slight yeast funk. A bit cloying. Really good stuff.

Citrus aroma and red gold color with a foamy head. Has a sweet honey apricot flavor with a slight bitter long finish.

Hazy medium to dark amber. Nice tan head. Smells sweet and grainy. Very carbonated. Alcohol is certainly there but not boozy. Plenty of alcohol warmth. I keep getting what comes off as grain to me... honey perhaps? Strange. I guess I’m struggling to make sense of this one somehow. Different from any other barley wine I can recall.
