Clear deep copper with a thin but solid tightly packed light tan head. Steady carbonation. Deep caramel, toffee aroma with some light wet cardboard. Light roastedness as well. Medium body. Decent burnt caramel maltiness. Dry, metallic edge. Lightly hopped (earthy). Initial malt flavor is there when you sip, then it fades into a ’badly burnt walnut’ aftertaste. Head remains solid, as does the carbonation. Body thickens slightly as it sits and warms but...this isn’t clicking. Not bad for an English Pale Ale but this is a very weak winter effort, especially coming from Montana.

BückDich (5464) - McCall, Idaho, USA - NOV 5, 2003
Pours a deep mahogany color with nice head and decent lacing for the style. The aroma is very light with a musty hop presence to it. The flavor was pretty assertive compared to the aroma, large hop presence with a citrus/pine finish. The finish lasted a little too long though, made the mouth feel slightly dirty. This wasn't that great of an EPA and an even worse winter ale.

Bottle. Light brown beer with zippo head. Aroma of sweet malt and jelly toast. Really. Stawberry jam I think. Taste is sweet and mouthfeel is average. Does not taste very strong. Fruitiness, including strawberries, is present and no hop flavors detected. While I am not a hophead, there needs to be more in this beer. Not so much for flavor, just needs a little more balancing bitterness. Like I’ve said before, this brewery seems to make lighter bodied beers than is normal for each style.

Ernest (6031) - Boulder, Colorado, USA - OCT 20, 2005
Head is initially average sized, frothy, off-white, mostly diminishing. Body is clear medium brown. Aroma is moderately malty (caramel, roasted nuts), lightly hoppy (apricot), with a light note of wort. Flavor is moderately sweet, lightly acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly sweet, lightly acidic, moderately bitter. Medium body, creamy/velvety texture, lively carbonation. Not a whole lot going on with this one, and there is a bit of a raw/unfermented worty character to it...homebrewers may dig that smell more than me.

Bottle

Pours tea brown with nice lacing. Aroma is a nutty hops. Flavor is bitter and hoppy, with a slight roasted malt flavor. Palate is watery. Overall, would make a nice session beer.

Cloudy garnet with a tain oily broken head. Nose is brown sugar, plums, and alcohol. Flavour features some piney hops and dark fruits. Mouth is watery. Uninventive and reminicent of something from the shiner breweries.

Bottle. Pours deep mahogany with a small, fizzy, light brown head, diminishing with fair lacing. Aroma is heavy malt (cookie, caramel, nutty), light hops (flowers), average yeast (dough) with notes of toffee and dates. Medium bodied, sticky texture, average carbonation, and a bitter finish. Short duration, light sweetness, moderate acidity and bitterness.

Bottle. Dark amber pour. Aroma of lightly roasted caramel malt, and some slightly metallic hops. The flavor is like the smell, and the metallic / edgy floral and spice flavoring is not good.

Copper in color; Thick to medium head with nice staying power; Light yeasty aroma. Good malt presence to start. Sweetness hard to come by. Similar to Young’s Winter Warmer.

sweet undertones, some malt, bit thin for the style. spice - some spruce? maybe vanilla? bready flavors. lightly hopped. not bad - but I like my winter beers a bit more robust.
