Pygmy Owl is an IPA with full fledged hop taste and aroma, yet is remarkably low in alcohol. In fact, it clocks in at only 4.2% ABV. An IPA with full flavor, but without the harsh bitterness. And the best part, you can have more than one without getting that drunkied up feeling.
Availability: February-April

12oz picked up a while back... I forget where I found it, but a fair number of places have it available now... Pours a pale straw... decent enough white head with spotty lacing.. Nose shows biscuity malt with bunches of lemony and grassy hops.. Flavor strikes me as a pretty heavy wheat/pale maltiness for anything labeled close to an IPA... but the bitterness balances pretty well and a good amount of light citrus and herbal/lite pine hops come in and make this very drinkable. Light body... good carbonation.. plenty of flavor... Pretty darn nice.

Anemic looking straw color from a bottle, ample white head with good lacing. Aroma of morning piss, flavor of a very hoppy domestic lager, watery watery watery. Not so good.

Orange body white head some lacing. Citrus, tropical fruit aroma. Pleasant. Taste is semi-bitter, resin, and oranges and other citrus juices. Not bad.

Bottle. Poured a clear amber color with an average frothy white head that mostly lasted with excellent lacing. Moderate earthy hop and malt aroma. Medium body with a smooth texture and soft carbonation. Medium bittersweet flavor with a medium bittersweet finish of moderate duration. My expectations where met.

Crisp, golden coloured body with a very thin, single centimetre tall tan head. Aroma of fresh light citrus hops with hints of light grain and some mellow malts - not much going on here. Light-bodied; Strong hoppy flavour at first with a good citrus, tropical fruit and floral flavour showing a good deal of interesting hops and a very small malt backbone. Aftertaste shows a little citrus twang with nothing unusual, unexpected or unwanted - good hops with not much malt or body and an easy-drinking Light IPA that shows well. Overall, decent for sure and on the verge of good. Not in the level of a great Light IPA, but worth trying if you like the style - given the ratings, I was expecting much worse, but this was not bad at all. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle, purchased from Sicilianoís in Grand Rapids, Michigan on 11-September-2015 for US$1,69 sampled at home in Washington on 15-September-2015, just four days later.

On tap: The aroma consists of light citrus, tropical fruits, lemon, faint, grapefruit, and a hint of dank hops. Itís a transparent golden-orange with a one finger white head that eventually fades to a thin film. There is some sporadic webbing left on the sides of the glass. The flavor starts with a quick dose of citrus and hints of fruit. The finish has light-moderate grapefruit, lemon peel, and a hint of dank hops. Itís light bodied with light-moderate carbonation.

12 ounce bottle into pint glass, best before 10/28/2015. Pours slightly hazy bright golden straw color with a 12 finger dense white head with good retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings down the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation retaining the head. Aromas of grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, lemon zest, orange peel, light pine, cracker, bread, light honey, herbal, and floral/grassy earthiness. Nice and pleasant aromas with good balance and complexity of citrus/floral hops and light-moderate pale malt notes; with solid strength. Taste of grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, lemon zest, orange peel, pine, cracker, bread, light honey, herbal, and floral/grassy earthiness. Moderate amount of pine/citrus rind bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, lemon/orange peel, pine, cracker, bread, and floral/grassy earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Good balance and solid robustness of citrus/pine hops and light-moderate pale malt flavors; with a nice malt/bitterness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and light-medium bodied; with a very smooth and moderately crisp/sticky mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with zero warming present after the finish as expected of 4.2%. Overall this is a nice session IPA. All around good balance and solid robustness of citrus/piney hops and light-moderate pale malt flavors; and very smooth and crisp to drink. A nicely enjoyable offering.

Shared 12 oz. can poured to snifters, showing a clear, golden color, with a layer of white head froth that gradually reduced to a persistent ring, and light spots & streaks of lacing. The nose was initially dank, then pine, and lemony citrus notes. Light bodied, with decent carbonation, the same notes were lightly bittered in the flavor to produce a dry finishing, and quite sessionable brew.
