COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
A multiple medal winner at the Great American Beer Festival, Coal Creek Porter has a solid and loyal following among Big Time's customers. Impenetrably dark at first glance, Coal Creek shows rich red highlights when held to the light. Its blend of dark roasted malts combines with three other specialty malts and unmalted flaked barley to give Coal Creek a satisfying roasted flavor and smooth texture. It is heavily hopped in the finish with Yakima Centennial. Original gravity is approximately 15 degrees Plato (1.060 Specific Gravity), and alcohol content is 4.5% by weight.

Draft. Blackish beer with an off-white head. Light malty/roasty aroma. Light roasty/chocolate flavor. Medium body. Lingering malty/chocolate/roast.

(Draught) Sampled at Big Time Brewpub in Seattle on March 2, 2007. Tan head with deep brown body. Nose of coffee and cocoa powder. The flavour closely resembles cold coffee. Interesting though only average overall.

On tap at Big Time, Seattle. Very deep ruby colour, tan head. Coffee porter, nice malts up front, then lots of sherberty hop on end. Nice charcoal aroma and in mouth but not sure the hoppy finish works.

[GABF 2006 – Denver, Co] Dark brown in color this had a great chocolate flavor and a nice finish this was a great beer and I like the malts and the finish was very smooth and creamy.

Draft at the Old Town. Pours deep ebony, almost black, with thick, moussy tan head. Gorgeous. Almost completely vacant nose, even after leaving it under a table lamp for fifteen minutes. Light chalky, slightly smoky, maybe roasty palate throughout (from the attack to the finish there seems little progression). Luscious mouthfeel, thick and creamy without being cloying or pseudo-nitro.

Somewhere between a porter and I stout, I think. Much hoppier and more bitter than a porter, with a more lively, less flat and oily mouthfeel. Not a bad change, just not what I expected. Jet black, almost no head, great lacing. Taste and nose of chocolate and coffee, dark malts, and pleny of hops.

Dark brown with medium head that I had to pour into the middle of the glass to get. This is a slightly mellow porter with good hop bite. Very smooth finish. A great drinking porter.

4 ounce sample on tap at the brewery. Quite roasted anise aroma with some grapefruity bitter PNW hoppiness present as well. Moderately-mostly opaque dark mahogany color with an off-white head and ok lacing. Creamy, smooth, toasted chocolatey start, which turns hoppy with grapefruity bitter notes that come through late. VEry creamy, smooth mouthfeel. A nice, hoppy, balanced porter.
