3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
9/4/07 On draught at the brewery. Aroma is very grassy forward followed by a light earthy/citrus tone. It works great and is very clean for an IPA. Appearance is hazy deep gold with a low off-white head. Flavor is a citrus/earthy hop blend forward with no dirty or musty characteristics and a solid sweet malt balance. Mouthfeel is medium/low bodied with moderate carb texture and a slight resiny feel. Overall, a great IPA with excellent balance between the different hop flavors and sweet malt.

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20
Sampled @ Big Time, April 2007
This beer has a copper color with a touch of haze and is topped by a wispy, light colored head. The nose seems quite muted after drinking the Perspective IPA and the taste is quite a bit maltier. There is a nice sweetness that accentuates a punchy hop character of pine, fruity citrus and some herbal notes. You can definitely taste a crystal malt character here; notes of caramel and a touch of toasty biscuit flavors. The finish has a pine-like, bitter character that lingers on for quite some time.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Draught pint at Redbons on 11/7/06
Indeed it is a scarlet-gold colored beer, with brass and copper highlights. Medium-high to high clarity, with small bubbles streaming upwards steadily. Small white/off-white head is formed, and is retained for the duration of the pint, leaving ample lacing in rings down the glass.
Very dry nose suggests a moderate amount of crystal malt toastiness, with definite breadiness and very light honey notes somewhat softening things. Deeply floral notes from the hops are both moderately bitter and somewhat spicy. Warming allows some fruitiness or perhaps, some lightly sweet citrus notes, to emerge. The combination of very dry, moderately high alph c-hops with dry crystal malts certainly challenges the balance of the nose, but there is enough base malt (IMHO) to provide balance. Fresh, unpasteurized character, with obvious lack of filtration. Warming really helps this one achieve a softness and fruitiness that helps take the dry/hard edge off. Very strong aroma, with plenty of well-drawn out hop aromatics and no alcohol/flaws.
Some light sourdough-like notes collect on the front of the palate, with a toasty, lightly acidic graininess following. But fruity hops quickly surge in, taking some of the focus off of the malt, and lending citrus, red fruit and light pine notes, with some spiciness achieved through combination of malt and hop. Bitterness is quite apparent and continues to dry things. Bits of pale malt sugars can be felt throughout, mostly adding a soft texture (aided by the low filtration) which is quite welcome in this very dry rendition. Acidity builds up, somewhat, on the finish, and seems to be the biggest problem here. While it’s very clean, flavorful and well-attenuated, the IBU strength and toasty/sourdough-like malt character takes away balance. Very engaging carbonation, however, somewhat helps spread about the bitterness/dryness. No looseness or wateriness whatsoever. Great stuff, a little more pale malt showing through would prove greatly beneficial, I think.

2.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 10/20
Much as I love IPAs I could not make this one work and did not finish a 4 oz sampler at the brew pub. Sweet malts and toffee. Complex hopping to be sure. Lacking focus, very muddied flavor rather than crisp and complex interactions. Yeah, American hops that I would expect to love, but the combination of many hops and the malts did not produce a focused or even an enjoyable taste. Long bitter finish. Nasty overtones to the finish as well. Signature appearance for a Big Time ... very little head, great lacing.
