Gold Medal in Brussels Beer Challenge 2013, in collaboration with Gunther Bensch from Browerij Montaigu (Belgium), is a beer with the touch of Barcelona. It has a cosmopolitan, innovative and creative spirit, as does the city.

BIIR’s recipe combines the tradition of Belgian Witbier and the innovation of American IPAs.

A large amount of barley and wheat malt from Central Europe provides body and alcohol content above what is usual in Wit. From Australian and North American hops it obtains fruity aromas and flavors, with the precise dose of bitterness that also turns BIIR into a refreshing beer. Three different types of organic orange peel and coriander brings out the aromatic flavors of Mediterranean.

Bottle at The Drunk Monk, Mataro. Hazy, pale yellow. Fruity and grassy nose. Refreshing, yet solid grassy hop bitterness towards the finish. Interesting.

On tap. II Summer Beer Festival, Gijón/Xixón. In short: Sweet then hoppy beer. Flavour fresh, fizzy and sweet at first, goes to a hoppy sour. Smell is flowery and hoppy. Incredible mixture of a witte and a soft IPA.

I don’t get a lot of wheat aromas, but rather citrus and coriander. Some of creaminess of a wheat beer in the taste. The taste is sweet, bitter and hops. Nice beer.

Huge, dense, just off-white head, over coldhazed, very carbonated yellow beer. Coriander, bit dullish rootspices, faintly aromatic. Huge head doesn’t help the sniffing... Taste yields more coriander, with an additional bitterness, maybe hoppy, but not necessarily USA hosp. Finish is soapy-perfumed. Wheatslickness, quite velvety, despite the high carbonation. Gold medial for the 666th version of Belgian wit. Ugh.
