3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Tasted this in the Three Judges, Glasgow in August 2013. Cask, handpump dispense. Clear black in colour with ruby highlights and a thin, creamy buff head. Aroma has notes of Idris Ginger Beer and dusty black malt. Good lacing throughout and has a thin but creamy mouthfeel. Dark malts gives a roast grain base flavour with burnt black toast and root ginger notes. Hop resins impart a black peppery flavour to the dusty, resiny aftertaste which compliments the fire in the malt. Finish is dry with burnt cereal husks evident in the malt edged taste. An unusual stout but not one for a session though.

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Cask @ Gallows Bird RAF 2013. Pours a dark brown. Aroma is loads of ginger, not unpleasantly so fortunately. Itís stingy as ginger should be, but not medicinal. Some roast there as well. Taste is a lot of ginger with some coffee and roast. Again, you can detect the gingerís spiciness and sting, but itís not unpleasant. Turns quite malt bready on the finish. Palate is medium.

2.5 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 10/20
Cask at Gallowís Bird real ale festival. Black with small head. Sharp herbal notes in aroma, not much of ginger here at first. Instead the ginger appears instantly in the taste and quite strong for that matter. Later on as well some ginger in aroma. Some notes of bitter chocolate in aftertaste.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Cask at the Gallows Bird XVI Real Ale Festival, Espoo, Finland.
Dark reddish brown colour with small light tan head.
Ginger and toasted malt... and ginger... and ginger in aroma. Flavour is more balanced with roasted malt, some hops and ginger. There's some swimming pool in aroma too. Balanced.

(Cask at Gallows Bird Real Ale Festival í13) The beer poured very dark brown. Its head was small and lightly brown. Aroma had roasted malts, chocolate and ginger. Palate was quite full bodied with low carbonation. Flavours were roasted malts, chocolate, ginger, sweetness and bitterness. Aftertaste was roasty and bitter. The ginger and the roasted malts were combined nicely.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
50cl bottle from Westholme Stores, Goring. Deep mahogany in colour with an attractive cherry red gleam, and a tight tan head; aroma of crystalised stem ginger; smooth and full-bodied with a thick chocolate body that wraps itself around the spicy ginger - just like a chocoalte ginger in fact; the finish is dry and lightly ginger with some underlying coffee grounds. A rather elegant stout that doesnít overdo the ginger, but makes sure that its presence is felt.
