COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Bintara Black Beer is based on the traditional style of an Irish export stout; full bodied, hoppy and higher alcohol. We have handcrafted the black beer with generous amounts of roasted and dark chocolate malts to give malty aromas, rich dark colour and a velvet smooth finish on the palate.

UPDATED: FEB 7, 2007 Bottle -- Pours a very dark brown/black colour with next to no head and next to no sign of bubbles. Full aroma of spice and liquorice. Flavour and palate don’t match the aroma, though, and are rather flat with a thin, vaguely oily mouthfeel. Reminds me of salty Dutch liquorice wth water added. I think this beer would go well with some hefty cheeses.

22 May 2006 - A touch of spice/aniseed and light sweet roasted malt aroma. Dark brown-black colour, good brown head and suds lacing. big roasted malt and light sweet flavour. Roasted malt finish.

Spice hop malt aroma with cinnamon aniseed and malt. Dark brown coca cola colour with good head and lacing. Bitter spice malt mokey flavour. Flat palate.

initial aroma on this is great, all the things you expect in a stout, Coffee, Licorice Roast Malt etc. Initial taste is one of more licorice and finshes of with some bitterness and a sensation of Mouth Coated Molasses. Appearence is a bit plain with a thin head. Overall good, would have rated higher with a bit more body. I think the finish is too thin which costs this a few points in the palate and overall.

Choos (507) - Taylors Hill, AUSTRALIA - MAR 6, 2006
Aroma: sweet slightly fruity malt, little metal, some carbon and a touch of liquorice. Apperance: poures slightly translucent black with red highlights. Small head that vanishes quickly. Flavour: chocolate, with some sweet malt and a hint of carbon. Palate: quite thin but a little oily as well making it hard to judge. Has a light cocoa and sweet aftertaste. This bottle was mildly carbonated.

Great-smelling, over-fizzy and under-bittered Australian stout. Wouldn’t rush to track this down again. Clear dark brown with ruby highlights. Poured with a brief fizzy head that retreated to a corona in less than 20 seconds. Nice thick aroma of molasses, bitter chocolate and sherry. Surprisingly strong aroma - suggests this will pack more punch than its 5.5% abv implies. Mouthfeel is all wrong. It’s initially spritzy and over-carbonated - you can actually taste the carbonation - but fading from a fairly oily feel to a thin finish. Completely ruined this for me. It’s very sweet, with some milky coffee and chocolate. Needs some balancing bitterness because it pulls up very short. Too many flaws to score this any higher. (330ml bottle, thanks Bridge for this)

omhper (15956) - Stockholm, SWEDEN - FEB 7, 2006
UPDATED: FEB 28, 2006 Bottled. Very dark brown, no head. Aroma of dark chocolate. Medium sweet with clean, rounded mouthfeel and medium body. There is roasty malt and plenty of chocolate which covers it’s fairly low bitterness. Certainly not stylish, but interesting and rather good.

Dark brown, but not black, not much head or lacing. Some roasted malt notes, but overall a pretty weak aroma. Is there crystal malt in this too? Fairly neutral flavour, but there’s enough bitterness there to show a bit of interest. Thin bodied, though with a medium fizz it’s not bad in the mouth. Definitely the best of Bintara. Black body with ruby red tinges and a compact light tan head. Burnt malt aromas along with some bonox or vegemite yeast. Mild milky coffee in the taste and I don’t usually like milky coffee, soft carbonation, medium body a little bit sweet but it was pleasant enough.

Drank straight from the stubby. Not a bad nose given the vessel - roasted coffee and some sweetness. Replays very faithfully in the mouth although sweeter than expected. Medium fizz seems suitable. Easily the best of the Bintara beers.
