Also called “Monk’s Café Flemish Sour Red Ale”

We blend young and old beers to make this mildy tart sour ale. Light bodied with a lactic/sour nose and a bit of sweet and sour in the finish. Very refreshing!

Monk’s Cafe-Flemish Sour Ale: Pours bright rusty red w/thin cream colored head. Enticing aroma of candied cherries and Vinegar. Thin and fizzy on the tongue. Candy apple, sourness and acid play nicely together. Simple but Profound.

Pours dark red/caramel. Large white, soft, pillowy head with a lot of lacing. Nose of strawberries, tart berries. Immediate mild, sour cherries. Medium body, slight sweet finish. Decent brew.

Slight malt aroma. Reddish Amber with pillowy foam that quickly dissipates, slight lacing. Winey, slight acetic acid, soy sauce, raisins, oxidized malt, trace oak. Mild sourness, a little thin in the body.

Robe brune couleur chocolat. Peu de mousse. Très fruitée, saveurs de cidre et de poiret. Aigreur marquée, sèche en bouche mais équilibrée par le fruité. Une très bonne bière.

Dark brown with medium beige head. The beer has an intensive chocolate, tart and red fruits aroma. The taste is sweet chocolate with raisins and medium sour like cherries. Great balance makes it easy to drink. Quite sweet though but it’s actually closer to Duchesse de Bourgogne then to American sours. It’s a perfect example of this style.

UPDATED: AUG 16, 2015 On tap at Monk’s Café in Philadelphia. It was really dark in the bar so I held beer up to light and as far as I could tell it is a reddish brown. Aroma is fruity tart with funk and horse blanket. Flavor is fruity tartness of cherries and finishes with yeast and funk. Really refreshing after a long day of walking around Philadelphia.

Caged and corked 750 mL. Red brown with a big foamy khaki head. Tart cherries, dust and light woodiness. Taste opens with a initial granulated sugar sweetness and has a tart cherry finish. Medium body with a clingy acidic feel.

Rated based on notes taken 22 Sep 2012 -- Great Flemish red. One day I hope to recreate the majesty that this beer embodies. Great example of the brew.

1986 vintage at akkurat. This vintage has a really old aroma, wet wood, sweet malts, bit of slightly tart berries, figs and dates, old cellar. Flavour is really well balanced, sweet malts, oak, old cellar, red berries, raisins, yeasts, vanilla, caramelized figs and dates. Quite subtle but really well balanced and I’m surprised it still has a slight tartness. Even the fact that it’s still very drinkable is amazing. Medium dry, little carbonation, medium body. The flavour really grow the more you drink.

Drank the Monk’s café Flemish Sour Ale. APPEARANCE - exceptionally red, great light beige head. NOSE - slightly sweet, not much sour scents. There?s a different scent in this that I can?t identify. FLAVOR - sweet with very light sour hint at the end. NOTES - not your typical sour. Excellent balance with the malt, and a very unique treatment.

From a 330ml. Pours reddish-brown with a frothy head. Yeast, cherries, raspberries on the nose and in the glass. Sour cherry and wine-like flavors. This is a delicious, refreshing beer, if a little on the light side of sour
