Also called “Monk’s Café Flemish Sour Red Ale”

We blend young and old beers to make this mildy tart sour ale. Light bodied with a lactic/sour nose and a bit of sweet and sour in the finish. Very refreshing!

A pleasant sour. The aroma gave this style away with sour cherry notes. Also reminded me of vinegar but not offensive. Nice reddish brown color with decent brief Head. Smooth palate. Sweet and sour taste with a lot of berry and cherry notes. Well balanced.

Monk’s Cafe Flemish sour red ale bottle, served in snifter. Very pretty dark ruby color, nice sour nose to it. Tart cherry flavor and medium body. Really nice lingering sour finish. There are a lot of way pricey sour ales out there that are not as enjoyable as this one.

Pours murky and opaque amber brown with one finger of light tan head diminishing gradually to a thin skim, spotty lacing. (4/5) Nose is red fruit, raisins, vinegar, woody and vinous notes. (7/10) Taste is moderate sweet, moderate tart. (7/10) Medium body, moderate to low carbonation, off-dry tart finish. (4/5) A very mild sour / oude bruin. Aromas of dark, slightly boozy fruit reminiscent of a quadrupel, but with a mildly tart, cidery flavour. Very drinkable and quite refreshing. (15/20)

Bottle @ Three Notch’d Tasting. Deep red pour with a tan head. Huge salted red fruits. Strong. Some mineral and fruit jellies. Taste starts sickly sweet. Juicy fruit, apples, cherry. Malty. Medium body, soft carbonation.

Dark red with a spidery lacing. Polished oak, cherries, a pleasant turpentine smell (let me huff that), caramel. Slightly tart, woody, mouth filling umami, acidic and citrusy, raisins. Lots going on here, not too sour to scare me away. Would buy again ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle as Monk’s Flemish Red in Seattle. Dark brown, lots of sweet and sour apple. Cidery body. Musty alcohol note. Mild, odd flavors, not great.

11oz on draft. Pours a rich dark brown with a hint of red. Nose is light raisin candy malt. Taste is plenty of raisin and candy with a lovely tang of sourness in the tail

Pours dark brown red with soapy head. Nose is slightly tart, apricot, cherry. Taste is very fruity, apricot, cherry, mild tartness. Very bubbly and effervescent, light body. Very easy drinking light tasty sour, if a bit basic.

On tap at Thirsty Monk Biltmore Park. Solid sour if not outstanding. Pours an appealing, transparent reddish brown with a decent off-white head. Not quite as sour as I was hoping for- somewhat malty and caramel notes upfront. Nice tart cherry and vinegar notes towards the middle/ end. Bit of funk and yeast and possibly maple happening too. Light to medium bodied. Sufficiently complex. Medium finish. More approachable (ie less sour/ tart) than expected. A must try in the world of sour beers.

Tart with dark cherry, light on the vinegar. Not sure of the age on this and whether it has anything to do with it but I get a lot of sour grape with this bottle.
