COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Also called “Monk’s Café Flemish Sour Red Ale”

We blend young and old beers to make this mildy tart sour ale. Light bodied with a lactic/sour nose and a bit of sweet and sour in the finish. Very refreshing!

A pleasant sour. The aroma gave this style away with sour cherry notes. Also reminded me of vinegar but not offensive. Nice reddish brown color with decent brief Head. Smooth palate. Sweet and sour taste with a lot of berry and cherry notes. Well balanced.

Old rating...monks cafe label. Brown-red. Sweet malts, cherry, hat, vinegar. More sweet than overpowering sour. Not the best from a usually tasty style.

March madness 2015. Excellent sour ale. There is some malt and a little fruit. This is a superbly balanced beer. Such an interesting style.

March Madness 2015 - My first sour. I am pleasantly surprised. Not really what I would call a beer but it has a nice wine-line fruity flavor. Pretty tasty. Not something I would drink everyday, but very nice for a change of pace.

Pours cloudy reddish brown with a one finger tan head with decent lacing. Aroma is of sour fruits, vinegar, wet hay, cherries, and sweet malts. Taste is similar to the aroma with some winey grape notes and light nutty malts. Has a medium body with a semi creamy mouthfeel and a semi dry, sweet and sour, medium-long, medium-long finish. Overall, a tasty, pretty complex sour brown.

Drank in a dimly lit bar out of a tulip so can’t see the color all that well but it’s brown and I can’t see through it at all. Smells more like a dubbel than anything, has a lot of cinnamon and candy sugar with some caramel and apples. The taste is kind much like the smell with a sour yeast characteristic added. The yeasty character and slight acidity is well balanced with the other flavors and they work in concert very well to produce a great wild ale.

Growler, listed as monks cafe Flemish sour at the store. Body a deep red brown, cream colored head fades quick. Aroma sour green apple jolly ranchers, kombucha, faint horseblanket, a little clove. Taste is cloves and pineapple, faint banana, sour green apple, at the finish, something bitter...I can’t place it. The palate is light, carbonation fine, slightly sharp.

15cl. at the Ghent Beer Festival in 2014, under the description of ’Monks Café Flemish Sour Red Ale’. As a Brouwerij Van Steenberge beer fan, I wasn’t really convinced by this sour red, brown beer. It is to artificially sweet, as a sour sweet candy beer. Almost like a pseudo cherry beer. Yet, the sour ale itself is a smooth drinker.

750 ml bottle. Pours dark red with tall, long-lasting, foamy off-white head and nice lacing. Nose is of caramel malt, vinegar and ripe fruit. Body is light, creamy and crisp. Taste is very similar to aroma. Finish is medium and acidic. Very refreshing, tasty brew.

On the label it states that the beer is a blend of young and old beer to make this beer, mildly sour. IMO this beer is quite sour! more than mild. Drinking this one on a cold blustery winter evening, might be more enjoyable during a warm summer day. Aroma is a sweet floral with slight warm fresh bread. The appearance is fairly dark for how light the palate is on this one. The head is minimal and doesn’t coat class very much. The flavor is again very sour and finishes with a nice taste of raw dough. The body is quite light compared to how dark this one is. Slight carbonation with a somewhat long finish. I haven’t tried this style in a long time so I can’t compare it, but i’m interested to see what else there is in this style.
