Also called “Monk’s Café Flemish Sour Red Ale”

We blend young and old beers to make this mildy tart sour ale. Light bodied with a lactic/sour nose and a bit of sweet and sour in the finish. Very refreshing!

On tap at Lunar Brewing Co., and tumbler served showing a brown/mahogany color, with a persistent layer of tan, cakey head foam, and a sheet-like cling to the lacing. The nose was light, yeasty funk, dark cherry, prune, concord grape, some vinous nature, and tartness, with a touch of vinegar, and lurking sweetness on the edge. The taste retained the tartness with a bit of prickliness on the tongue, the subtle funk, added some barrel hints, but became quite sweet & Kool-Aid-like, as it thinned out on the palate, due to low carbonation. Not bad, a lot going on, but a little too cloying for me.

Bottle to glass. Clear garnet with light tan head. Yeast floating from aggressive pour. Moderate low lactic/sour with cherry and malt. Taste is tart cherry. Sweetness at the finish is complimentary.

330ml bottle, as Monk’s Café. Pours a slightly cloudy, deep brown, with a beige head. Spicy, oaky aroma, slightly sour, malt, caramel, red berries, vanilla, light funk. Dry, medium body and bitterness, balanced CO2. Spicy taste, quite sour, oak, caramel, berries, citrus. I expected it to be a bit more complex. It ends on a very bitter, tart note. (2014-04-16)

Nice variety of fruit scents on nose. Not crazy sour as it is balanced out by some dark fruit sweetness.

Cola red-brown color. Not a ton of head but a little. Aroma is earthy but with a red wine grape. The flavor is sour dubbel stuff; more red wine grape. I love the way it sits on the tongue for a while after. Hint of cherry.

Pours a deep reddish brown with a foamy light brown head. Was not expecting that at all. Aroma is red wine, earthy, cherry, sour fruits. I’m not very experienced with sours so it’s hard to put to words exactly what I’m smelling. Taste is sour cherries, granny smith apples, and slight malt on the back end. Different, but I like it.

The appearance is a dark brown colored body with a thick two fingered white foamy head that dies at a moderate pace and leaves a big foamy thick lacing gracing the sides of the glass. The smell is sour and tart and somewhat sweet cherries, maybe some apples that seem slightly spiced. The taste is sweet, sour and tart that seems to be all at the same time; sweet sour sticky apple cherry aftertaste, the finish is somewhat quick and sticky. The palate sits about a medium and really doesn’t show much sessionability to it as well as it shows some decent sipping aspects to it. Carbonation is very subdued - I like it. Overall, to me, I say this is a good Flanders Oud Bruin that I think I could have again. I did have one the other day with some sloppy joes and thought that was excellent.

Well hey, love sour beers, because they are sour. This one has little of that character. Came highly regarded, and is tasty, just not what I was looking for.

On tap at Toronado. (sold as Monk’s Cafe Flemish Sour) Dark red with a small head. Quite sour with vinegar, spices, red berries and some oak. The finish was sour and fairly dry. A descent one.
