Jonte (402), Gothenburg, Sweden Jan 13, 2008 Updated: Jun 10, 2008 Bottle. Sample at Haket, Gothenburg. Red/brown color with a small beige head. Aroma: A bit different from the other Sour Ales I tried this day. Notes of wood, earth, caramel, sour cherries, tart, light vinegar. Flavor: Very sour with notes of vinegar, red berries, sour wine, citrus. Less sweetness then other beers of this style. Interesting to try it, but nothing for me.
Moosington (9), Costa Mesa, California, USA does not count Oct 11, 2008 Copper-Red with a lean towards the red. Creme head with pretty nice staying power with nice lacing. Very acidic aroma, but more of an apple cider vinegar aroma coupled with cherry cola. Hits the taste buds pretty hard, akin to vinegar, but this is to be expected. The maltiness does just enough to curtail some of the acid and makes for a decent brew. MrChopin (206), Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA Oct 8, 2008 Reddish-brown with an decent off-white head. Nose is balsamic and cherries up front, a little nut and earth in the back. Flavor is more acidic and contains some balsamic, citrus, wood, and earth. Funk comes in the finish. Palate is rather fizzy and stings the tongue, but it’s also a little thin and watery... that said, these qualities help balance the overwhelming balsamic. Enjoyable stuff and quite refreshing, though the balsamic is a little strong for my taste. JK54B (385), Finland Oct 6, 2008 A bottle tasted at Vastarannan Kiiski with Mirjukka. White head. Reddish copper colour. Some "coke"-sharpness in the nose. Mild sourness in the taste. Also slight sweetness and maltiness. steview (783), Oceanside, California, USA Oct 5, 2008 "Monk’s Cafe Flemish Sour Red Ale" is the beer label that I saw, anyway... aroma of sweet chocolate and tart cherries; murky brown body with light tan head that forms huge and soapy, then diminishes into rockiness, but ends only in some typical ring that looks soapy--chaotic lacing remains after the glass is emptied; tastes damn tangy, but good, malty; great beer, but nothing awesome. paiste2002 (32), Saugus, California, USA Sep 24, 2008 On draft at Naja’s Place labeled as Monk’s Cafe. Deep ruby red in color with an off white head that went away very quick. Very nice aroma of sour cherries and quite
carbonated. Flavor is very nice, tart, tangy, sour goodness. Some Balsamic in the background with a long tart woody finish.
I really enjoy this one every time I’m at Naja’s. Very nice on one of those hot So Cal summer afternoons at King Harbor.
