Smelled of tomatoes and vinegar. Tasted like a carbonated V8 beer. Very acidic. Felt some stomach discomfort after just a few ounces. Did I get a bad one? Maybe sour ales aren’t for me.

Bottle. Subtle aroma with some sweet fruit and sour notes. Flavour is tart, but not particularly sour for the style. Some sweet candy and dried fruit notes. Could use a little more sourness and a little less candy sweetness. Tasty and refreshing, but nothing outstanding.

From notes, 4 oz draft pour consumed on 5/18/2013 at ChurchKey. Dark reddish brown with 1-2 fingers of off-white head. Nice sticky lacing. Aromas of sour fruit, vinegar, tart notes. Tastes of sour grapes, vinegar, slight tart notes. Medium body with a semi-dry finish. Medium-low carbonation. Not as sour as I’d prefer but still solid.

Classic old-fashioned ’versnijbier’, a tradition of imitating oud bruin by blending a regular beer with a sour one. Also tasted as Monk’s Café Flemish Sour Red Ale, which is apparently the same. Beige head, dark hazy bronze colour. Aroma of raisins, passion fruit, sour cream, sour red berries, chocolate, old sherry, yoghurt; very fruity taste, sweet and sour, caramelly, a bit woody, ending in a drying sourness. Very credible, though it isn’t even a ’real’ oud bruin.

Appearance – The beer served a reddish brown color with a nice clarity. Upon swerving there is a thick white head floating atop the brew. The head sticks around for quite some time eventually fading to leave a decent level of lace on the sides of the glass.
Smell – The aroma is sweet and tart with lots of dark cherry and plum with souring notes of an apple cider vinegar and some lactic acid bacterial funk smell.
Taste – The taste begins with a sweet dark cherry and a little bit of sour grape and sour cherry. As the flavor advances it gets more and more sour and tart in nature, but maintains, all the while, a good level of sweetness. Apple cider vinegar and some funky yeast flavors accompany the souring and tart flavors at the end leaving a pleasant sweet and tart flavor to linger on the tongue.
Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is one thinner and crisper side with tons of tiny carbonation bubbles. The prickly carbonation and thinner body are great for the sweet, sour and tart fruit flavors of the brew and help keep the tart from becoming too overpowering.
Overall – This is a great sour. It isn’t too heavy in any one component – not too sweet, sour, or tart, but the right blend of the three for a very enjoyably drinkable brew.

Served on-tap at Al’s of Hampden into a tulip.
A - Pours opaque reddish brown with a fizzy half finger tall off white head leaving little to no lacing down the glass.
S - Smells of tart sour cherries, oak, some lactic sourness, and a light sugary sweetness. Not as funky as I was expecting it to be, still a decent amount of sourness tho.
T - Starts off with a bright lactic sourness that fades quickly leaving hints of tart cherries, candied sugar, dry oak tannins, and some dark fruit. Finish is a mix of light sourness and sticky sweetness, lingering for a short time. This was ok at best.
M - Medium body and flavor with moderate carbonation. Good amount of pucker initially quickly dieing down leaving a sticky sweet feel. Finish is a mix of light sourness and lingering sweetness.
O - This is far from a bad beer, but it really never wowed me. I liked the flavors but the sourness cut out far too quickly and you were left with an overly sweet red ale.

Pours nice very deep red with tall foam that maintains. The aroma is light cherry and fruit. Flavor is light and refreshing. Slightly tart. Finishes cleanly.

Reddish. Aroma is earthy malts. Taste begins promising- vinegar - but quickly begins very sweet and very yeasty. No sour. Not a good beer.
