Also called “Monk’s Café Flemish Sour Red Ale”

We blend young and old beers to make this mildy tart sour ale. Light bodied with a lactic/sour nose and a bit of sweet and sour in the finish. Very refreshing!

Deep reddish pour with light off white head. Aroma of vinegar, sulfur, some candied apple. Smells like salad dressing. Flavor is apples, light acidity, some vinegar and light tart notes. Some cherry, lots of sugar. Sweat, or maybe it’s because I’m sweating my ass off in this apartment. Fizzy carbonation, blegh. What a disappointment.

15cl. at the Ghent Beer Festival in 2014, under the description of ’Monks Café Flemish Sour Red Ale’. As a Brouwerij Van Steenberge beer fan, I wasn’t really convinced by this sour red, brown beer. It is to artificially sweet, as a sour sweet candy beer. Almost like a pseudo cherry beer. Yet, the sour ale itself is a smooth drinker.

750 ml bottle. Pours dark red with tall, long-lasting, foamy off-white head and nice lacing. Nose is of caramel malt, vinegar and ripe fruit. Body is light, creamy and crisp. Taste is very similar to aroma. Finish is medium and acidic. Very refreshing, tasty brew.

On the label it states that the beer is a blend of young and old beer to make this beer, mildly sour. IMO this beer is quite sour! more than mild. Drinking this one on a cold blustery winter evening, might be more enjoyable during a warm summer day. Aroma is a sweet floral with slight warm fresh bread. The appearance is fairly dark for how light the palate is on this one. The head is minimal and doesn’t coat class very much. The flavor is again very sour and finishes with a nice taste of raw dough. The body is quite light compared to how dark this one is. Slight carbonation with a somewhat long finish. I haven’t tried this style in a long time so I can’t compare it, but i’m interested to see what else there is in this style.

What are flemish people called? Flems? Huh... Idk.... But whatever, they make good beer. Not one of those warhead beers that make your teeth feel funny, but like....... Beer.... There’s a lot of stuff going on. Suffice it to say I am a fan.

Monk’s Cafe Flemish sour red ale bottle, served in snifter. Very pretty dark ruby color, nice sour nose to it. Tart cherry flavor and medium body. Really nice lingering sour finish. There are a lot of way pricey sour ales out there that are not as enjoyable as this one.

Pours murky and opaque amber brown with one finger of light tan head diminishing gradually to a thin skim, spotty lacing. (4/5) Nose is red fruit, raisins, vinegar, woody and vinous notes. (7/10) Taste is moderate sweet, moderate tart. (7/10) Medium body, moderate to low carbonation, off-dry tart finish. (4/5) A very mild sour / oude bruin. Aromas of dark, slightly boozy fruit reminiscent of a quadrupel, but with a mildly tart, cidery flavour. Very drinkable and quite refreshing. (15/20)

Bottle @ Three Notch’d Tasting. Deep red pour with a tan head. Huge salted red fruits. Strong. Some mineral and fruit jellies. Taste starts sickly sweet. Juicy fruit, apples, cherry. Malty. Medium body, soft carbonation.

Dark red with a spidery lacing. Polished oak, cherries, a pleasant turpentine smell (let me huff that), caramel. Slightly tart, woody, mouth filling umami, acidic and citrusy, raisins. Lots going on here, not too sour to scare me away. Would buy again ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
