2.6 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20
Deep reddish pour with light off white head. Aroma of vinegar, sulfur, some candied apple. Smells like salad dressing. Flavor is apples, light acidity, some vinegar and light tart notes. Some cherry, lots of sugar. Sweat, or maybe itís because Iím sweating my ass off in this apartment. Fizzy carbonation, blegh. What a disappointment.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
750 ml bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 11/17/2011. Pours slightly cloudy deep ruby red/brown color with a 2 finger fairly dense light khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Light spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation retaining the head. Aromas of tart cherry, green apple, pear, raisin, plum, fig, caramel, brown sugar, brown bread, cider vinegar, leather, hay, straw, grass, musty funk, light oak, and herbal/yeast earthiness. Nice and pleasant aromas with good balance and complexity of fruity/funky yeast, dark/bready malt, and light oak notes; with solid strength. Taste of tart cherry, green apple, pear, raisin, plum, fig, caramel, brown sugar, brown bread, cider vinegar, leather, hay, straw, grass, musty funk, light oak, and herbal/yeast earthiness. Light fruity/earthy tartness on the finish; with lingering notes of tart cherry, green apple, pear, raisin, plum, fig, caramel, brown sugar, brown bread, cider vinegar, leather, hay, straw, grass, musty funk, and herbal/yeast earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Nice complexity and balance of fruity/funky yeast, dark/bready malt, and light oak notes; with a good sweetness/tartness balance and no cloying flavors after the finish. Medium-high carbonation and medium bodied; with a very smooth, crisp, and slightly creamy/acidic mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is a nice Flanders Oud Bruin style. All around good complexity and balance of fruity/funky yeast, dark/bready malt, and light oak flavors; and very smooth and crisp to drink. More of an entry level sour for sure, but has all of the normal flavors I would expect from the style; just more toned down and approachable. A nicely enjoyable offering.

4.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
Iím so used to drinking American sour ales that Iíd kind of forgotten the style had originated in Europe. Monkís Cafť Flemish Sour Ale is an authentic, Old World style sour beer and I can see why itís maintained such high popularity all these years. A delicious palette of fruits, tartness and sourness. Thatís what I call well-balanced.
I poured an 11.2oz bottle into a tulip glass. There was no discernable freshness date. It cost $5.49 ($0.49 per ounce).
Appearance: Dark brown hue, opaque, but with maroon highlights. Pours to a large, tan, frothy head which laces and retains very well.
Smell: Sweet, fruity nose akin to sangria. Strong sour presence.
Taste: For such a popular beer, there isnít much in the way of official description for this brew, so Iím not entirely sure what goes into it. Thereís a strong fruity flavor here, especially of black cherries, currants, and raspberries. Is that from the malt, yeast, or bacteria (or is the beer made with those fruits)? Thereís a light, but consistent sourness from start to finish. Slightly tart at first, but finishes quite rich and sweet with notes of chocolate and vanilla. I detect the faintest hint of a vinegar character, though itís more like a raspberry or maple vinaigrette and it works perfectly here.
Drinkability: Sours can be rather intimidating to drink, for newbies and experienced drinkers alike. I had absolutely no trouble throwing back a glass of Monkís Cafť Flemish Sour Ale since it was in no way intense or out of control. The mouthfeel is calm, with a smooth texture and finish to match. It leaves an almost completely clean aftertaste, which is a bit of a bummer considering how delicious the beer is while in the mouth (itíd be nice if it hung around a bit). I canít believe itís only 5.5% ABV considering how flavorful and full-bodied it is otherwise.

Bottle from Archive Beer Boutique 141014, Monkís Cafe Flemish Sour Ale. Certainly is sour, even the foam sets the mouth a puckering. Big head with a bit of sediment in the final pour.
