rbsxg05, bottled. not a koelsch but not that bad. rusty amber colour with a light head, some corn syrup in the aroma but then a surprising amount of bitterness and actually finishes quite drinkable
2.8 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 Bov (7342) - Bienne, SWITZERLAND - FEB 1, 2007
courtesy of Laurent Mousson - clear reddish-amber colour, big creamy beige head and a nice lacing; aroma of meat and yeast; medium-bodied, a touch of bitterness, some tartness, more notes of meat in the finish - deeply strange ... and by no mean a Kölsch

2 AROMA 3/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 6/20 highlandlad (1325) - Blue Mountains, AUSTRALIA - DEC 31, 2005
Another South African beer that didn’t benefit from the journey to Oz. Either it was infected or it’s a very queer fish. Looked okay, pale brown with a fair head. But the aroma was sour and phenolic - and not in a good way. Following a South African beer that smelled of barbecue sauce, this one smelled of tuna. Perhaps we should have mixed them. The palate was a bit dull but smooth. On the tongue, it was fruity but a little stale, with some toffee notes. Certainly, it had none of the shining hoppiness that you might expect in a kolsch. (Bottle, Sydney RateBeer Xmas gathering 2005)
2.3 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 8/20 Aarleks (408) - Sydney, AUSTRALIA - DEC 22, 2005
Bottle (RB Sydney XMASG ’05): Looking at the other ratings below mine it seems as though this really doesn’t transfer to the bottle well. Clear amber with a yellowy head. When I put the glass to my nose I thought someone must have dropped a bit of food in it as there was a distinct aroma of tinned tuna. This sat on a herbal bed that was occassionally laced with charcoal chicken. Riiiiiight... In the mouth things were just as dissapointing; chalky blandness with a meaty mid-palate. This wasn’t really bad, though it was certainly not good. Per was right to put this down as a Bitter, albeit a positively weird one.
3.9 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 18/20 ChrisG (31) - Secunda, SOUTH AFRICA - DEC 20, 2005
Very bitter beer with a dry after taste. A reddish dark colour. Not an everyday drinking beer, but the one from Birkenhead with the most taste.
3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 omhper (15956) - Stockholm, SWEDEN - DEC 15, 2005
Draught at the brewpub. Clear bronze colour, small creamy head. Dryish and very roasty. Firmly malty with crystal malt character and plenty of caramel. Some spicy hops salty bitter lingering finish. Probably the best offering from Birkenhead.
