On tap at the Gingerman when I stopped in with Joe after Paul’s tasting. Pours a clear orange color. Berries and plums, brown sugar and chestnuts. Tastes like it would be good on pancakes. Syrupy with cinnamon toast flavors. Sticky sweet finish, brown sugar and caramel.

Bottle from Oak Tree. Pours dark brown/ruby with a few light tan bubbles for head. Dark fruit, kandi and yeast/spice aroma. Hop? Full bodied. Very mild and smooth carbonation. Flavor is darkly roasted malt - more caramel actually - with some floral hop. Not much bitter. Fairly well balanced. Nice drink. Not a trace of heat.

Bottle at Marea. Pour is a medium brown with an off white head atop. Candied sugars, yeast, dough, and traditional belgian spices. Nice malt backing - strong, robust, but very approachable for 9.5%

Bottled@The 1st Vaasa CS/ES beer session (thanks MMM!). Slightly hazy deep amber colour with a thin off-white bubbly/fluffy head. Aroma is sweet and sour fruits along with some spices, mild yeastyness as well as some slight burnt sugary notes. Flavour is quite much the same with a slight alcohol warming touch. A quite plesant beer, even though it is rather sweet. Quite bodied as for the palate. Weird, but I like.

I had this on tap at Beachwood BBQ’s Italian Beer Festival. This reddish-amber pour has some orange and plum notes.

Sanguine muddy brown slosh with bitter sweet almost orange taste. Very complex and delicious. Rated 7/6/09

On tap at Rustico’s, Alexandria. Dark brown pour, ruby highlights, light tan head. Nose is cherry, alcohol, and malt. Initial flavor is cherry hard candy and sweet malt. Not very balanced. Liquer-like. Nice try, but there are a lot of better Belgian Strongs out there, for a lot less dough.

On tap at Church Key DC: Transparent copper amber with a spotty-lacing covering of off-white head. Sweet biscuity pale malty nose has some floral orange peel notes. Starts with good fullness and sweet pale maltiness with some bitter orange rind spice before a slightly warming bittersweet finish. Pretty complex, yet drinkable.

Bottle from Smith’s. Pours turbid dark brown with 2-finger off-white head. Nose is caramel malt, Wheaties, hops, and brown sugar. Tastes caramel malty, with syrupy caramel notes, ESBish flavors including tannins and nuts, some brown sugar, and slight funk. Very well hidden alcohol, as this one doesn’t seem a lick over the BMC upper limit of 3% ABV.

Tap at Churchkey. Clear reddish maroon, edge bubbles. Aroma of wood, furniture polish and citrus. Taste is very acidic and bitter, herbal overtones. Interesting but rough.
