COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION

Using ingredients found on archeological sites (different cereals, hazelnuts, raisins, pomegranate, resins, honey), this project is supervised by Patrick McGovern (university of Pennsylvania).
At Del Borgo the beer is fermenting in clay amphorae.

Pours cloudy hazelnut with thin head that disappears quickly. If not for the description of, stored in amphorae, I doubt I would have identified that aroma as terracotta, but it’s a definite factor along with wood, honey, caramel and a citrus-like spike. On the palate, Birra del Borgo’s version of this three-way collaboration is a light, tart mead. Pomegranates lead the way, with tartness spiking to lemon. Underneath, nut and honey tones become earthy. Dry finish, light and refreshing. Not the best sour I’ve had, nor the cheapest, but worth checking out for the origins of the (sour) species.

9.3%ABV. Traditional Ale. This poured out of the bottle with no head. Poured out like looking like an unfiltered cider. A rich tea brown of about 18ºSRM. Nose had a fresh acetic sourness. Palate is characterized by sour, acetic, lemon juice flavors. Interesting.

Bottiglia 33cl, regalo del folkstudio. Chiara con schiuma non troppo persistente. Corpo molto fitto, carbonazione appena accennata. Frutta gialla, aspra ed acidula. Interessante. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhold

Bottle from Eataly, Milan; bb 09/2014, LCR 15/12L
Cloudy blond-golden color; the medium sized head disappears quickly. Weird aroma; wood, honey, unripe fruits, white grapes; acidic. Highly carbonated; it definitively has some honey and mead character, quite dry; the fruits used give a lemony impression; quite high acidity level; it has a nice touch of white grapes and fox grapes (uva americana); it’s not unbalanced, it has some bitterness, but the final is short.
Interesting experiment, quite pleasant, surely better that the explosive bottle of Baladin Etrusca.

Bouteille 33cl @ Il Punto, Bologna, BB 03/2016.

White weak head. Deep golden colour. Aroma is sour with vinous and spicy notes. Flavor is moderately fruity (apple, pear) with sour tones, ending in a sour and moderately fruity finish. Medium bodied.

Bottle 330ml.

[ As Birra del Borgo Archeo Birra Etrusca ].
Clear medium yellow orange color with a small, fizzy, fair lacing, mostly to fully diminishing, off-white head. Aroma is moderate malty, pale malt, grape, wine, vinegar, light resin, light vegetables. Flavour is moderate to heavy sweet, light to moderate acidic and bitter with a long duration, sweet fruit, tart grapes, sharp fruity, honey sweet, peppery. Quit strange beer but some how i did like it ;D Body is medium, texture is oily to watery, carbonation is soft to flat, finish feel is light alcoholic. [20140705]

Birra del Borgo, Erusca Aged in terra cotta, funky bottle. APPEARANCE - light brown color, held the cloudiness for entire time we were drinking it. Bottle may have been a bit flat, very little head or apparent carbonation. NOSE - surprisingly smells like a light sour but without the astringency that some sours have. Very earthy FLAVOR - very earthy flavor with a good bit of pleasant sour mixed in. It has a tremendous flavor for such a mild nose. NOTES - Excellent experiment between Birra & DFH on these two. Same analysis, very different beers resulted. This one is excellent and it’s a great deal of fun to think about what people may have been enjoying almost 3000 years ago.
