Thanks Manuele! Murky red-amber, large bubbled thin creamy white head. Lightly vinous nose, vanilla and red wine showing aged elements, but champagne-eque qualities in citrus and pepper keep it lively. Flavor is equally balanced, a sweet blend of red wine, can sugar, lightly bitter oak, marshmallow through the finish. Lower carbonation befits the sweeter style, and though a bit all over, the elements work very well together.

375mL bottle in to the new CBS snifter. Served at ~53F. A - Pours a dark hazy amber (root beer-ish) with 1cm of khaki head and minimal lacing. I wasn’t expecting much with the abv. S - Tart cherry, fig, caramel, grapes, slight oak. T - Sweeter than the nose. Starts sweet with oakey caramel and vanilla and then finish with a strong dark fruit element(dates, plums, over ripe figs). A nice balance with just enough depth. M - Smooth and creamy carbonation and the french oak leaves a nice tannic finish. O - This was a damn fine "Barleywine", although I think it fall might fall more along lines of an Old Ale. The closest thing I could relate it to would be BA Decadence 08’ blended with BB4D... The alcohol is well hidden for a 16% beer, slightly warms you from the gut, but no outright alcohol smell or taste. I’m very glad to have another bottle of this!

Strong, sweet (rum-like) aroma; sugar, syrupy, walnut. Deep brown in color with no head. Flavor is slightly tart-apple and flat with a syrupy-walnuty character. Notes: On tap at Open Baladin Roma ’10

Small off-white head over unclear foxy-copper beer. Alcohol, fusels, wood, lactic acid, fresh oak with vanilla, and lots, lots of fruit (red grapes, preserved oranges, peach,...). Taste totally in line with the nose, with again lots of winey esters. Other ferments are obvious: pediococcus,...? Sharp, slightly burning MF, viscous. Overall superb, winey beer in the style of some of the better RR-ion beers.

33cl bottle. 2010 vintage. Served at cellat temp, gusher warning. Pours a burnt caramel brownish color with a medium beigr head. Foam dissipates quick, almost like a soda. Nice alcohol lags on the side of the glass. Aroma is powerful and sweet. Caramel, toffee, cane sugar, molasses, plums and boiled pears. Alcohol and wood. Some licorice as well. Taste is sweet and booze. In your face. But enough complex to make this really interesting. Burnt sugar, molasses, coffee beans, wood, alcohol. Plums and other dark fruits. Very sweet. Mouthfeel is thick with soft carbonation. Overall, definetely interesting and stunning in its complexity and intensity. The booze is definitely there and at 16% ABV you must expect it. Anyways, it’s not overwhelming and helps cut through the sweetness. I’m not exactly a sweet tooth, but I really appreciated the intensity and complexity of this one. My two cents: if this were to undergo a light souring process, maybe in an "infected" red wine barrel, it would come close to perfection. PS: as it warms up to room temp, a slight bitterness comes through on the palate to balance out the sweet booziness. A lot like cocoa nibs. Nice.

I have had other offering from Birra del Borgo before, but I still did not know what I was getting myself into when I picked the bottle out of the fridge at Lion’s Pride. Presented in an intricately decorated box, this little bottle packs quite the punch of complex aromas and flavors. Very dark, thick brown color with a minimal head. Taste of malt, vanilla, cocoa, and oak. Very thick, with the finely mixed flavors masking its high alcohol content. The epitome of a perfectly constructed barley wine. Kept the box and bottle to remember the awesome beer drinking experience.

Wow. Pours a dark muddy brown with a heavy carbonated white head. Nose is port, raisin, brandy, yeast and cocoa. The taste and palate of this beer is very complex. Each taste is different. What a treat! One of the highlights of my beer drinking life! Cheers!

Mondial de la Bière 2011, Strasbourg - pours a dark brown beer with no head retention; complex aroma with notes of Portwine, wood, nuts and vanilla; moderate carbonation and thick solid malt backbone; a respectable bitterness before a long aftertaste of Portwine and vanilla; strong warming alcohol notes
