375mL bottle in to the new CBS snifter. Served at ~53F. A - Pours a dark hazy amber (root beer-ish) with 1cm of khaki head and minimal lacing. I wasn’t expecting much with the abv. S - Tart cherry, fig, caramel, grapes, slight oak. T - Sweeter than the nose. Starts sweet with oakey caramel and vanilla and then finish with a strong dark fruit element(dates, plums, over ripe figs). A nice balance with just enough depth. M - Smooth and creamy carbonation and the french oak leaves a nice tannic finish. O - This was a damn fine "Barleywine", although I think it fall might fall more along lines of an Old Ale. The closest thing I could relate it to would be BA Decadence 08’ blended with BB4D... The alcohol is well hidden for a 16% beer, slightly warms you from the gut, but no outright alcohol smell or taste. I’m very glad to have another bottle of this!

Scopey (9998) - Croydon, Greater London, ENGLAND - SEP 24, 2015
Mini bottle shared by Leighton. It pours deep brown with a small beige head. The nose is soft, toasted sugars, toffee, fruit cake, Eccles cake, jammy berry and wood. The taste is smooth, rich, toasty, fruit cake, raisin, sultana, chewy malt, malt acidity, jammy berry, sugary fruits, wood and alcohol warmth throughout the finish. Rich and warming. Perhaps too much alcohol presence, but nice nonetheless.

Bottle shared in Canaan, NH. Picked up in Rome. Pours unclear brown with a slight, foamy tan head. Quite a bit of wood on the nose, leathery fruits, earth. Medium to heavy sweet flavor, lots of meaty, leathery fruits, hearty bread, tangy herries, toffee. Full bodied, oily and chewy, with fine carbonation. Warming finish, lots of toffee and jammy fruits, faint cocoa, earth. Boy, this is some heavy duty stuff. But it’s also really damn tasty, and actually pretty drinkable. Wonderful stuff.

Bottle at Bishops Arms in Örebro. Boozy smell with wood and caramel. Similar taste, hint of smoke, oak, burned sugar and some roasted aromas. Not overpoweringly boozy considering the ABV.

Nattsvart, inget skum. Doft av kaffe och choklad, men inte "stoutig". Bara viss alkohol tränger igenom i doften, desto mer i smaken däremot. Lätt sötma i smaken, en gnutta syrlighet i början, tydliga alkoholtoner. Något vinös. En del russin. Mäktig!

Malty figs flavor, raisins, caramel, vinous notes, warming alcohol, sweetish, chocolate notes, plums, some woody notes. Really nice fruity barley wine.

33 cl bottle @ Ma Che Siete Venuti A Fa. Bottled on 06.11.2014.
Pours dark red color with no head. Lots of dark berries on the nose, plums and raisins, sweetish malts, vinous notes with some syrup on the background. Sweet and sugary flavor, syrup, caramel malts and loads of plums and raisins. The sweetness hides the alcohol quite well but isn’t overly sweet, good balance. Excellent slow sipper delicacy with a berry twist.

33 cl bottle @ Ma Che Siete Venuti a Fà. Bottled 06.11.2014, batch LS912B
Bottle says 16 months
Aroma has cognac, licorice and ripe fruits. Also chocolate. Flavour has strong licorice tones, alcohol, ripe fruits and raisins. Also some woody tones. Complex and sweet slow sipper, reminds me of some Lost Abbey beers. Gets a bit berryish with calvados at the end of the glass.

Ragnampiza (751) - Rome / Lecce, ITALY - OCT 5, 2014
Cask (?) at Eurhop beer festival 2014. Dark brown with some purple tinges, no head at all. On the nose rich grapes notes, red wine, tons and tons of dark fruits, wood, leather and calvados aroma. A hint of bitter dark chocolate as well. Very complex overall, with just a subtle alchool presence. Balsamic and herbal feeling on back of the palate, slick, velvety and sirupy as expected. Dark fruits, burnt caramel, molasses and warming alchool in the aftertaste. Flat to soft carbonation, almost full body, oily texture. Great, but in very small doses, imho.

Alengrin (3670) - BELGIUM - SEP 4, 2014
UPDATED: AUG 28, 2015 Exclusive, limited, unusually strong Italian barley wine refermented with champagne yeast and oak aged. Thin, unstable, off-white head, dark burgundy colour, hazy. Intense, extremely seductive and complexely perfumed aroma reminiscent of all kinds of good things: chocolate liqueur, vanilla extract, old port wine, almond, cranberries, raspberries, elderberries, liquorice, sage... Candied fruits in the mouth, liquorice, chocolate sauce, complex spiciness, soft and elegant roasted bitterness in the end, full mouthfeel, alcohol warming but otherwise remarkably well-hidden for a beer of 16% ABV. If you’re a sucker for barley wines like me, you will thoroughly enjoy this; I guess it’s the Italians’ experience with fine wine which leads their progressive breweries to come up with exquisite barley wines like this one. Very memorable and one of the best beers I ever tasted.
