4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
375mL bottle in to the new CBS snifter.
Served at ~53F.
A - Pours a dark hazy amber (root beer-ish) with 1cm of khaki head and minimal lacing. I wasn’t expecting much with the abv.
S - Tart cherry, fig, caramel, grapes, slight oak.
T - Sweeter than the nose. Starts sweet with oakey caramel and vanilla and then finish with a strong dark fruit element(dates, plums, over ripe figs). A nice balance with just enough depth.
M - Smooth and creamy carbonation and the french oak leaves a nice tannic finish.
O - This was a damn fine "Barleywine", although I think it fall might fall more along lines of an Old Ale. The closest thing I could relate it to would be BA Decadence 08’ blended with BB4D... The alcohol is well hidden for a 16% beer, slightly warms you from the gut, but no outright alcohol smell or taste. I’m very glad to have another bottle of this!

4.9 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 20/20
Exclusive, limited, unusually strong Italian barley wine refermented with champagne yeast and oak aged. Thin, unstable, off-white head, dark burgundy colour, hazy. Intense, extremely seductive and complexely perfumed aroma reminiscent of all kinds of good things: chocolate liqueur, vanilla extract, old port wine, almond, cranberries, raspberries, elderberries, liquorice, sage... Candied fruits in the mouth, liquorice, chocolate sauce, complex spiciness, soft and elegant roasted bitterness in the end, full mouthfeel, alcohol warming but otherwise remarkably well-hidden for a beer of 16% ABV. If you’re a sucker for barley wines like me, you will thoroughly enjoy this; I guess it’s the Italians’ experience with fine wine which leads their progressive breweries to come up with exquisite barley wines like this one. Very memorable and one of the best beers I ever tasted.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle, big thanks to Luca (Mortlach) for sharing at the one and only Ma Che, Roma, 08/02/14.
Lightly hazed/semi murky chestnut brown with moderate beige edgework formed of bubbleage.
Nose carries a boozey pa pang, dark toffee, nutty, earthy, dark fruits, Xmas cake mix, sherry twang, woody.
Taste comprises rich dark fruits, caramelised sugars, lick’o’booze, woody twang, dates, raisens, dark toffee fudge.
Full bodied, fine carbonation.
A well balanced barley wine, solid rich dark fruit vein running through it, it never gets overly sweet. The 16% ABV just doesn’s show up in this one !
Good work !

03/01/2013 330ml bottle (Vintage 2010). Corpo pieno, carbonazione leggera. Barley Wine sontuoso!

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle... Cloudy brown ale with a minuscule, creamy, off-white head. Decent retention. The bouquet offers singed caramel, crusted port and dark raisins - loads of them. Medium-bodied with busy carbonation. The flavor is sweet and moderately acidic - dark raisins and a hint of dried plum with a light splash of oloroso sherry. Finishes tangy and a bit lactic. Bottle courtesy of ctipping!

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Bottle: Poured super cloudy dark brown color ale with a small foamy head with minimal retention and some light lacing. Aroma of brown sugar with some dried fruits notes is quite intense. Taste is also dominated by loads of sugar with some dried fruits thought still balanced by a solid malt backbone. Body is full with limited filtration and medium carbonation with no apparent alcohol. This is quite sweet but never gets into gross territory and stays somewhat drinkable with a good amount of complexity.
