Birra Roma is inspired by the colors and flavors typical of Rome, the Eternal City. With its gold color, this beer has a strong malt taste, that gives it a sweet scent. With its light but persistent body, it stands out fairly and pleasantly bitter with a toasted aftertaste and a touch of smoked wood. Well matched with Italian dishes, in particular with Rome’s typical cuisine.

Editor’s note: apparently the first bottles were called simply "Birra Roma", and as of 2013 "Birra Roma Ambrata"; Ambrata and Bionda can be separated by the ABV.

One of those new (and often exciting) Italian micro brews, in this case celebrating the city of Rome and intended to accompany Roman cuisine... Pours a deep, slightly brownish cloudy amber colour with dark bits of dead yeast here and there, under a medium thick, crackling, greyish white head. Pleasant aroma of fresh orange peel, walnuts, mango, grapes, pink grapefruit, gingerbread, peach, baker’s yeast, autumn leaves, leather, cantaloupe, banana. Adding the yeast deposit expectedly gives more of the fruity esters. Fruity onset, mango and unripe peaches, orange peel freshness, progressing to become very yeasty with powdery mouthfeel, nutty malt sweetishness, slightly toasted with soft carbonation, ending in a leafy and lightly citrussy hop bitterishness, dryish; the yeastiness lingers a bit, as well as the nutty maltiness. Pleasant thirst quencher, but the body is on the thin side. Are we sure this is a Märzen? Seems more like a top-fermented beer to me, like an English bitter or a ’spéciale belge’...

Bottle from Barrique Odijk, BB 01 2015, large sample. Hazy amber color with quite some small debris floating around, medium frothy off-white head. Aroma is spicy, slight caramelly, butterscotch, hint of toffee, hint of smoke. Bit sweet in taste, slight bitter. Medium carbonation, bit thin body. Decent enough beer though.

Une belle couleur, légèrement houblonnée, très sympa. Mériterait d’être un poil plus complexe. Bouteille bue chez Presco Fresco, Paris, France, le 17/06/2013.

Bottle @ MaartenRF10. Thanks for sharing Maarten! Hazy amber color, small off-white head that diminishes almost instantly. Aroma is malts, quite sweet and floral. Taste malts, sweetness, a hint of honey, floral, a hint of strawberry (Dutch) "jam". Decent body and carbonation. Highly doubt it’s a good example of the style but the beer is quite decent.

Troebel amber met vlokken, iets teveel gist uitgeschonken. Kleine vuil witte kraag. Beetje rook in de geur. Snaak moutig, caramel, bloemig, behoorlijk zoet maar toch wel ergens verfrissend.

0,7 ml bottle with a unique flat design. (shared.) Appearance: Deep red coloured beer, quite active and clear body. On top of that there is about a 2 fingers off white head, with good retention, which leaves light lacing. Aroma:grains, cooked vegetables, light smoke. Tasted: Grains, light caramelised malts, some sweetness, vegetables , no smoke there. A bit one dimensional. Thin body, slighty abover average carbonation.

Medicine-like bottle 0,33ltr: Hazy amber colored brew with an nice fruity bitter taste. Hints of caramel and slightly Bambergian smokiness. Classy beer label and typical Italian, lets brew an Oktoberfest, but give it something Italian and something from Bamberg.

Nice looking bottle, 330 ml, at home. Poured into a tulip glass. ABV 5.5% Pours a deep red coloured beer, with lots of activity in it and a moslty clear body. Almost two fingers of off-white head, with very good retention, leaving light lacing around the glass. Aroma of toasted grains, cooked vegetables and even some hints of coffee. Taste of malts, cooked vegetables with the same notes of coffee and even some mocha, with a nice little bitterness on the aftertaste. Medium body, average carbonation, quite dry on the palate. I liked this one quite a bit, pleasantly surprised.

Bottle. Amber color, cloudy. Malt and hints of smoke and licorice in the aroma. Malty soft smoky flavor with hints of licorice. Not perfect, but likeable.
