16th June 2016
Scopeyís grand vertical. Thanks to Dan. Very hazy gold beer, thin pale cream colour head. Palate is light and dry with decent carbonation. Sharp acid start, lemon and vinegar. Some other things going on but who cares. Daydream? More like a burning nightmare! Fuck me this is a stinker. Should keep Paulís drains clear for a few weeks I suppose.

3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Bottle shared in East Croydon - many cheers to Danny Boy. Pours hazy gold with a creamy, white head. Smokey aroma with lemony undertones, with just hints of funk. Quite acidic, fairly dry, lemony, with some dry band-AIDS, hard grassy bitterness. Medium bodied with spritzy carbonation. Finishes with rubbery peat, more harsh grassy bitterness, acidic lemon bite, more band-aid. Novel, but not hugely drinkable.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle, big thanks to Dan. It pours cloudy pale golden - orange with a thick white head. The aroma is earthy, funky, musty, dirt, farmyard, manure, peat, medicinal action, whisky, dirt and muck. The taste is crisp, tart, sour lemon sherbet, grapefruit, medicinal, some bright acidity, barnyard, gooseberry, smoked peat and dirt with a sour lemon finish. Medium body and fine, foamy carbonation. Pretty freakin odd, but actually ok.

2.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 8/20
Pours a very cloudy, deep ruby red color thatís completely opaque with dark mahogany edges and a two finger off-white head that very slowly settles into a thick lasting ring. Very good retention with streaks of soapy lacing left behind. Possibly over carbonated but otherwise looks pretty good.
Funky, smokey aroma with a subtle barrel presence thatís delicately integrated into hints of leathery malt, musty bugs, vinous fruit and acetic acid. Very unique with some liquid smoked, charcoal, campfire and bacon followed by damp oak, wild yeast, sourdough bread and sweet fruit. Not the most inviting aroma but you can smell mostly everything that went into the blend. Smoke, peated whiskey, brett, leathery malt, oak, grape, raisin and dark berry. The smoke, acetone and funk are most prominent but the nose is really complex.
Medium body with tight carbonation and a very strong acetic quality that initially overpowers the other flavors. Harsh and solvent like with strong acidity, solvency and vinegar. After the palate adjusts, the smoke, leathery malt, wild yeast and dark fruit notes start to stand out. Only 16.5% of the blend is barrel aged yet there is a strong dry oak/toothpick presence along with funky brett/wild yeast flavor. The smoke doesnít really show until the finish with faint lingering hints of charcoal and butane. Iím not really picking up anything that reminds me of a Marzen and all of the malt character is dry and leathery. Desperately in need of some sweetness. The dark fruit notes from the nose are evident but only slightly.
Overall, this beer is kind of a mess. Harsh, overly acetic and tough to drink with a one dimensional flavor profile. The peat/smoke and barleywine character is completely overpowered and I donít think anyone could guess Marzen was in the blend. The brett character is okay with decent funk but this beer is too dry and acetic for my preference. Disappointing offering from an otherwise solid brewery.

4.2 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Good beer; although, it smells much better than it tastes. Aroma is smoke, vinegar, fruit, malt. Appearance is a hazy amber with some head. Flavorís like nose, but smoke is much stronger and clashes a bit with the tart. Decent body and finish.

On tap at Whatís Brewing 2015
Pale, white head. Smell of yoghurt, smoke, funk, berries, complex and interesting. Moderate sweet, more smoke, peat and whisky, acids take over, tart stuff, quite crazy and different from the rest. One of the last beers of the day, so the notes are not too detailed
