Heavily hopped, it has aromas of grapefruit, white grape and tropical fruit. Warm and fairly bodied, bitter but balanced, complex and persistent, its palate shows its character. It finishes with balsamic and resinous notes.

After watching the trailer of the movie “Machete” 4 years before its showing, I was sold on creating a beer to honor him. Not any beer, only one could bear the weight of such a name: a Double IPA. I have always been fascinated by well brewed Double (or Imperial) IPAs. These are far from easy beers to brew. Limiting the caramel amount, achieving a good dryness, making sure that the higher alcohols are not overpowering are some of the key elements to avoid an undrinkable “sludge”. Above all, hop has to emerge over everything else, powerful and imperious.

This is an extreme beer, either loved or hated. It has no middle ways, middle ways are not for Machete. Machete doesn’t come to compromises. “Machete don’t text”.

Bottle, 31/10/14, BBE 05/15, lot #077/14, ABV 7,6%. On the pour, the glass is filled with a large, off-white frothy head. There’s noly a little bit of bright orange liquid on the bottom. The beer continues to be like this all the way through the bottle. Aroma is hugely fruity, a veritable fruit salad. Tuttifrutti candy flavor, fresh, sweet banana, citrus, mandarin, papaya. The taste is not as full of fruits. Caramel is present, a tad of alcohol. Fairly full of fruit still though. Citrus and mandarin. Some resin, light pine. Quite dry, especially for a DIPA, though the ABV is fairly low for the style. Fairly full, carbonation is much too strong. Constant foam really detracts from the beer.

Sampled @ Borefts 2014. Pours a clear golden beer with a small white head on top. Aroma of grapefruits, light grainy, loads of malts and hay. Flavor is medium bitter, light sweet and malty. Light bittersweet aftertaste with all the features you would expect from an IIPA. Very decent.

The colour and texture of the beer does not serve it justice. Nice aroma, but for a double ipa it could have been much hoppier in taste. A bit too carbonated, but the after taste isbso pleasantly caramel.
