A special one time creation that truly lives up to its name. The base is a Stout brewed with hot chili peppers that has been aged for almost 2 yeasr with blueberries & pediococcus. It is opaque black in color in with just a touch of carbonation. Quite acidic & tart along with very intense flavors and aromas. This nightmare is sure to leave a lasting memory.

On tap at Monks. Pours near black with a creamy caramel brown head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma has a good amount of tart blueberry and dark grains/roasted malts. Flavor has a good amount of sour and acidic blueberry with a hint of roasted malts.

Draft at Eulogy. Opaque pour with a foam tan head. Watery vinous black sour. Feeling a high ABV off the top though the finish is smooth. Unusual combative flavors. Balsamic vinegar. Blueberries. Chipolte. Coca-cola. Cold coffee. Raisins. Dark, ashy,smoky, spicy, fruity, juicy and above all quite sour. Pungent. Body seems too light. Not particularly feeling that these flavors are playing well together. Interesting to have once as an experiment, but once is enough.

Draft at the Gingerman pour has a deep brown color and a thin coating of off white head. Aroma has medium acidity, muted berry, dark malt, and some heat. Mouth feel is light with medium carbonation. Flavor gets quite acidic, light blue berry, dark malt based, and a snap of heat. It gets dry and puckery with growing acidity.

Draft. Black beer with a tan head. Light acetic aroma with light dark malts. Very acetic flavor with blueberry and dark malts. Medium bodied. Acetic notes linger with blueberry and chocolate.

Draft at Zwanze day. This was odd and I’m not a fan. Pours black with a brown head. The nose is a train wreck. Messy, sloppy, phenolic, peppery and vinegar. Some black malt comes through. Of course, so does burnt plastic. On tasting, distinct blueberry under burnt sour plastic. Vinegar again. Not clean acid, not clean beer. Muddy. Blech.

On tap at Brouwer’s Big Wood 2012. Black pour (!). This one is nuts -- dark, sweet malts with really tart blueberry/raspberry notes. Reminds me of the cassis available at the Alibi Room in Vancouver, BC. Someone near me likened it to a "sipping vinegar," which isn’t far off -- it has some balsamic notes, for sure.Sweet, fruit-infused balsamic, with a little oak, and a tiny bit of smoke. This was a really, really pleasant surprise for me -- and makes this brewery 2-for-2. I’ll be looking out for more from them in Seattle, for sure.

On tap at Brouwers. Colour...damn near black with no head. Nose...giggly acetic, but the berry aspect is there too! Palate.. Gentle CO2, then a massive burst of acetic acid that never dissipates and transcends into a beautiful berry and somewhat cherry like blend on the palate. There’s a slightly vinous character to boot, and it all converges nicely in the mouth and all the way down.

Awesome fruit sour. Aroma is berry, roasted malts, some vinegar and yogurt. Taste is vinegar too, cherry, dried fruits, acidic and tart. Surprisingly easy to drink in its complexity.

Sampled at Zwanze Day - 2012 (Chicago, IL). Pours a rich deep black brown hue, darker with touches of brownish frothy head. Dies to a film, laces small. Deeper dark pour overall. Aromas throw red wine vinegar, cherry, and gentle blueberry. Some vinegar, touches of toast. Bigger sour acidic nose hits the nostrils firmly. Initial is a bit tart and acidic up front. Toast, blueberry fruit, firm tart sour elements hit the palate, sour cherries and red wine. Some darker malts give some silky elementsn biscuits, toast. Middle is touches of vinegar, blueberry, cherry, red wine oak. Not as harsh, a firm blueberry skin element is hard on the backend. Some gentle sweetness, darker malts, gentle toffee. Toast, red wine, and good solid sour cherry and vinegar. The nose hits harder than the beer itself, a good thing I think. Much more inviting overall. Good berry element, some raspberry, blueberry, and lingering firm vinegar and red wine. Simple but it works. Backend is solid, nice flavors and rich blueberry. Never actually gets acidic like the nose suggests. Gives just the right bit of pop throughout. Nose might scare some offn but this is pretty nice overall. A more assertive Flanders with good blueberry skin and fruit elements, red wine, vinegar.
