Quite complex and quite nice, definitely a step up from the regular Verdi.

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
330ml bottle [Islay 2002, 10% abv as per label]. Darkest brown colour with small, frothy to creamy, reawakening, moderately lacing, brown head, leaving a thin layer. Dark malty aroma in combination with whiskey flavours results predominantly in intense fruity, vinous notes, also clove; the dry leather whiskey touch can only be analysed secondary. Taste has a heavy dark malty, minimally sweet basis, dry, leatherlike overtones, a touch of peat, warming alcohol in the finish. Sadly the fruity notes in the aroma are not reproduced in taste.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
330 ml bottle @ Patricks. Dark amber, almost black body with a fast disappearing brown head. Pleasant, quite strong aroma of dark malt, islay whisky, dry fruit and hint of vanilla. Flavor has a lot less whisky than expected from aroma, but sometimes islay is dominating too much so this is just perfect. Flavor feels almost dry and dusty and still sweet at the same time. Smoke, peat, ashes, liquorices and a relatively mild bitterness. Fine body and a long aftertaste. This is a really balanced and nice flavored beer.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle at Patricks. Islay 2002. Black, and topped by a dense, finger-thick, light tan head, it certainly deserves its name. Peat, camp-fire, roasted malts, dark sugar, ripe cheese and alcohol on the nose. Full-bodied on the palate, warming, sticky and soft. A light peaty touch, roasted, burnt, licorice-ish, and with some peaty notes in the flavour. Not much bitterness, but it’s still sort of balanced. Lasting finish. A pleasant beer indeed. 120823

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
330ml green bottle. 10%abv on label. Speyside 1969. Deep brown pour, hint of ruby at the edges. Light brown head, decent looking, creamy, tight bubbles. Light streaks of lacing in the glass. Nose has big whiskey up front, chocolate, some decent woody barrel character. In the mouth the beer has big roast and chocolate notes, getting a tanginess from the barrel (I’m guessing). Finishes roasty and pretty dry, some black coffee and a late hint of peat. Woody notes emerged in the finish during the second half of the bottle. Medium bodied, good level of carbonation, tight bubbles on the tongue. All around a highly enjoyable barrel aged impy, though I can see why some people may not be a fan of it.
