Top fermented beer which is subjected to a secondary fermentation in bottle. It is deep dark ebony in color with a cappuccino head. The nose has aromas of chocolate, licorice, coffee grounds and tobacco with alcohol nuances. Its full bodied, long lasting, smooth and dry mouth is followed by a surprisingly hot finish that breaks its initial fullness and makes you crave more!

It is suitable for aging.

Dedicating one of our beers to Giuseppe Verdi was a must since our microbrewery is located in Roncole Verdi, the composer’s birth place. When I returned from my first visit to New York City I decided to create a beer that would be superior in elegance, balance and drinkability to all those stout varieties I had overseas. Although the initial recipe has changed, the very first batch matched my vision. Its uniqueness lays in the use of chili pepper which combines very well with the beer’s chocolate aroma. The hot finish also lightens its full bodied mouth by awakening the palate.

Verdi Imperial Stout is the first Italian craft beer to have ever been crowned with a gold medal in its category at an International beer contest. In 2008 it ranked first at The European Beer Star in the Imperial Stout category.

Bottle courtesy of bu11zeye. Dark brown pour. Sweet chocolate pour. Nice roasted malts. Tasted sweet malts with a dark chocolate bitter finish. Pretty good way to start off the tasting.

bottle, thanks to bu11zeye, dark brown with tan foam, lacks much aroma, light cocoa flavors and some spice

Bottle thanks to bu11zeye. Pours with a tan head and a deep brown, near black body. Aroma of tar, chocolate, brown sugar and molasses. Taste is chocolate, and light pepper heat at the back with some earthy notes in between. Medium viscosity and light carbonation.

Near black colored with red hints, little light brown head. Licoricy aroma with roastiness, peppery spices and salt, vanilla and dry cocoa come up too. Medium to full bodied. Flavor is also smooth with roastiness in start, cocoa and thin vanilla here too. Strong pepper comes up and lasts in aftertaste, still fits here ok, does not cover anything else.

Thanks Doug! Dark charcoal aroma, little waxy and a hint of spice. But only suggestively. Jet black, tan head, moderate lacing. Full mouthfeel, a larger gulp revealed the chipotle smoky heat and sting that is tempered nicely by the burnt grain and creamy body. Dig the twist.

Bottled. A pitch black beer with a brown head. The aroma has notes of sweet malt, roasted malt, and a bit of bourbon. The flavor is sweet malty with notes of roasted malt and alcohol. The body is light compared to the flavors.

Bottle. The appearance is a fine pitch black, dark brown head. The aroma is pleasant with plenty of chocolate, coffee, raisins and a little sweetness in the background. The beer tastes like it smells, a lot of chocolate and roasted notes. The aftertaste was a bit spicy, interesting.

Tap at Ginger Man. Aroma of gently roasted malt, molasses, toffee, cake. Flavor has all the delicate sweet notes, medium rich, with an equally soft though not subtle pepper spice coating. I hadn’t picked up on the peppers at all in the aroma, and even in the mouth, they were far less aggressive (fortunately) than I thought they’d be, really seeming to play more of a hop-substitute roll with hot spice to balance the rich malt instead of bitter hops. Interesting and tasty beer.

UPDATED: MAR 5, 2010 Bottle at home ... deep black ... creamy tan head ... light roast malt ... soft thin roast ... little toffee ... some liquorice ...little spice ... actually the spice/chilli does build ... in fact i hadnt realised the hot peppers was there till i read description looking to see if i was imagining the burn ..nice but not stunning ... but the hot pepper clearly raises this beer above the mundain.

test batch ... deep black .... chocolate malt nose... not getting the spice ... good solid roast

(bottle - 330 ml) Dark black pour with a creamy tan head. Coated the inside of the glass. Aroma is loaded with chocolate and cocoa notes mixing with some roasted malts and some light nutty notes. Flavor begins with a very nice and smooth chocolate note that goes to a roasty and lightly bitter middle At the finish, the heat from the peppers comes through. It’s very apparent, but not overpoweringly so. Just leaves a nice little heat in the back of your throat. Amazing stout.
