3.4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20 Heathen (1243) - Wilmington, USA - NOV 8, 2010
THOUGHTS: I had extremely high hopes for this one since I paid about a dollar per ABV percentage for it. It only made it half way there. It was sort of thin and a little lacking in the flavor intensity, but it amazed me that it hid all that alcohol so well. It also seemed closer to watery liquor than a strong beer. It was totally missing that barley wine aroma and flavor.
TECHNICAL: Bottle. Poured a murky, medium to dark reddish brown with light brownish red highlights. Overall it looked sort of burgundy. It has a very small off-white head that mostly diminished. It also had tiny, small and medium particles in the body of a thin to average density. The aroma was nice but very weak. There was light to moderate molasses and caramel; brown sugar, cola, alcohol, apple cider, dark fruit, liqueur and hints of essence of chocolate. The initial flavor was moderate to rather sweet; and light to moderately sweet and light to moderately bitter with a long duration. There was light cocoa, caramel, brown sugar, cola, alcohol, dark fruit, and very dark chocolate. The light light to medium body was oily and then rather dry with soft, yet slightly tingly carbonation and a slightly alcoholic and very to almost harshly dry finish.

Panama City Beach Fl - Chan’s Wine World (brought back by my wife) - stubby 11.2 oz bottle. Pours a dark ruby red fading to brown with a thin, but sticky off-white head. light lacing. Sweet molasses in the aroma, hints of dates and raisins. Flavor is full-bodied and leaning to the sweet side of the spectrum. Pick up some moist canned brown bread, some molasses, a hint of citrus, back end of chocolate. Velvety smooth, thick mouthfeel. Very solid!

Pours ruby colored with a few lonely bubbles of carbonation. This beer was strong but not overpowering, and quite complex with notes of carmelized fruit, vinous malt, sherry, plum, spice and light chocolate. Full to heavy bodied, very light carbonation.

Bottle 330mL. Pours a cloudy brown with not much head and several floaties. Aroma of cocoa, alcohol, and berries. Flavor hides the 12.5% quite well, sweet caramel but not much of the promised cocoa. Finishes dry and a touch thin.

chocolate aroma, hazy golden brown appearance, sweet to bitter taste, light body, thin texture, and soft carbonation. Not what I was expecting. Maybe I was looking for something more like a coffee or chocolate stout? Sorry, Tosta, overall, I am disappointed

3.1 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 16/20 mixmasterob (678) - Marietta, Georgia, USA - MAR 14, 2011
Bottle from Greens. Clear dark amber pour with zero head. Light fizz. Aroma was light caramel malt, some sweetness, light booze and a super light roast character. Almost nonexistent. Very uneventful. Flavors were lightly sweet, caramel, not much else. Mouthfeel was smooth, somewhat light. Carbonation super soft. I gave it a higher overall due to the fact that I couldn’t believe it was over 12%. Very drinkable.
