Mortlach (1253) - Rome, ITALY - MAY 12, 2015
500ml bottle shared @Johnny’s Off License. Hazy golden appearance with a big and persistent off-white head. Aroma is grass with tropical fruits, some malt and yeasts, slightly yeasty. Flavour is light sweet with a dry and bitter end. Medium to light body, good carbonation. Weird hoppy lager, but very interesting and well brewed!

Bottle shared with mortlach at the Johnny Off L. beer store in Rome-Italy. Pours golden bright hazy with huge off white cap. Nose is prwdominantly cascade hops, so tropical and summer fruit with a bit of an herbal accent. In the mouth it reminds some IPL I drunk before, a weird style in my personal opinion. Th beer is ok but too bitterness in a lager body gives you just hops in their roughest essence. Decent anyway.

Draft at Open Baladin in Rome. Clear rich yellow with amber hues and sticky lacing. American hop nose is snappy apricot and juicy orange with a faint floral-herbal impression. Lightly sweet with balanced bitterness, medium-low acidify, medium-low carbonation and rough malt graininess that seems to be my biggest complaint and the biggest limiting factor keeping this from scoring in the high 3s. Overall it’s decent stuff, shows the Cascade hops well, very fruity-juicy in aroma and the mouth, but perhaps not lagered long enough given the roughness. More of an American pils / IPL in character than a traditional continental Pilsner.

Keg at FOB, Rimini. It pours an amber/gold color with a fizzy white head. Aroma is earthy and grassy. Taste has nuts with some smoke and alcohol. Light bodied with good carbonation. Overall, decently tasty

Lager con luppolo da amaro tedeschi bilanciati dal cascade aromatico americano creano una piacevole complessità di profumi e sensazioni.

(Keg) 330 ml on tap at Il Maltese. Dark gold/light ruby, slightly hazy, with an average and persistent off white head. On the nose sweet malts, wet hay and plenty of resinous and almost balsamic. Perhaps more astringent than usual, but not at all in a bad way. Perfectly dry, slightly juicy, spot on level of bitterness. Lingering fruity and hoppy taste, with just a hint of toffee/caramel presence in the background and a jam/marmelade feeling as well. Decently refreshing and thirst quenching. Average carbonation, light to medium body, creamy texture. Good.

Bassa fermentazione con luppoli americani, al naso presenta tutte le caratteristiche di una APA, anche perchè il luppolo fresco risulta molto coprente. In bocca invece si riscoprono tutti i piaceri di una lager con un finale amaro persistente.

My Bottom Line:
Delicately honeyed and biscuity malts are ably enhanced by floral and resinous hops in this polished New World Lager.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A sheet of foam covers the shiny dark golden.
-Drinkability on this one is enormous. Mouthfeel is lean and the prickling soft.
-The aroma could be better developed.
-This is as well malted as it is well hopped.
-Flavor definition is very high. Crystal clear execution here.
-This is very much in the same philosophy (and quality of execution) as many of Jack’s Abby’s beers in Massachusetts.

On tap at Open Baladin Roma.

(bottle 01/06-2014) low lasting white head, clear amber color, hoppy aroma, slightly bitter, hoppy taste, rather fresh and good on a warm summer day. BB date 09/10/2014.
