2.2 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 8/20
.5 liter bottle, says best by April 24, 08 so I should have plenty of time, yet this tastes pretty old already. Pours a deep woody brown almost black with a thinning off white - grayish head with some good lacing. Aroma is toasted caramel malts, light munihc, but lots of graphite pencil, woodiness, and oxidized wet paper and cardboard with a good amount of dust and mustiness. Flavor is dirty old mild milk chocolate, nuts, crackery malts, burnt toast, and a drying soy and papery finish. Mouthfeel is a bit weak with a lot of mineral and some metallic and blood-like hints. Meh.

3.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Poured from a 500ml green screw-top bottle - This has a dark mahogany body lightly highlighted in red and a smallish tan head that evaporates too quickly. The aroma is rich with chocolate, roasted malt, and a prune or two. A bit thin and weakened in flavor, all carries over from the nose along with a hint of smoke. Not bad.

3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Bottle: Cola in color, perhaps a bit darker, moderate fizzy beige head, spotty lacing.   Bready nose, in the dark sense, very
minor biscuit.   Soft bready malts on the tongue, semi-sweet.   Not as astringent or roasted as I would have thought.   For a
Schwarzbier it seems on the lighter side, which is fine by me.   Not heavy at all, in fact while its dark it seems quite light.
Body and mouthfeel are moderate.   Does kinda thin out towards the backside tho.   Pleasant finish, even if it does appear to become
somewhat cereal oriented.   Not a lot of flavor to capture me, but clean, light, tiz okay.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
I am quite a fan of shwarzbiers, and while this strays a bit from the style, it is an outstanding black lager, as a schwar-doppel hybrid. Pours a dark brown with a filmy light brown top. Refreshing fragrance of malt balls and german hops play lightly. It’s been awhile since I’ve encountered these welcome smells of a fall. Tingly, dusted deep malt flavor similar to a doppel (such as Kloster ’s). Medium-bodied, hits the spot with refreshing malted medley.
