hotstuff (3249) - USA - DEC 7, 2011
Bottle purchased at Total Wine & More, Naples, FL on 12/07/2011. Poured a medium sized frothy, semi-fizzy ivory head that mostly diminished. Transparent body, one ring of lacing and a reddish-brown hue. The aroma was malty, caramel and semi-sweet. Ditto for the flavor with a semi-dry finish. The mouthfeel was oily and this is a light-medium bodied beer. Overall, this beer was easy to drink, but it lacks character.

Draught, as Bischoff Doppelbock. Medium brown colour. Slightly fruity sugar aroma. Sweet sugary taste with some fruity character but this isn’t rich like a tropical sugar. So in that respect, it is less than ideal, but if you start to think of it as a tropical stout rather than a doppelbock your opinion improves.

I liked this. The nose is very bready like freshly baked rolls. The beer is dark brown with a thick cream head. The taste is breaxy with notes of dark fruit and a touch of clove like spice. The beer is very smooth and clean. The body is medium thick.

Meh...a very average doppelbock. I wonder if this would taste better before the long journey here. Aroma was a weird mix of skunk, metal and dark roasted caramel. Pour was deep dark amber/near brown with a one finger white head. Taste was the same as the aroma. A little thin and watery with an equal mix of metal and burnt caramel. The finish left a nasty taste in my mouth. Medium carbonation. Not very good

kerenmk (413) - Tel Aviv, ISRAEL - FEB 25, 2012
Draught at Porter&Sons Tel Aviv. Pours clear dark brown with a hint of red and a big white head. Roasty malt aroma, raisin and rain forest. Rich bitter taste, some roast in the mouth as well. Smooth, full body, abrupt finish. Quite decent.

(Bottle) Pours reddish brown. The aroma is light roasted with tones of caramel, dark bread and herbal/floral hops. The flavour is light roasted, caramelly and mild grassy. The mouthfeel is soft and chewy. Medium bodied.

This is sort of a misfire as far as doppelbocks go. It looks nice enough w/ it’s brown, clear color, white head and fine lacing but despite the fact that it was not skunked even though it was in a green bottle, there is still something here that just doesn’t work. The nose is grain husks w/ a metallic twinge that grows stronger once the beer is tasted. Tis is a bit oversweet, sticky thick w/ vigorous carbonation. There is a bit of alcohol in the finish and overall this just isn’t that good.

11.2 ounce bottle - Hop City in Atlanta, Georgia. Best Before: 10/02/12.

Appearance: Pours a very dark brown body with a slim, bone white head.

Smell: An unappealing sniff of grainy pils malt soaked in ethanol, hardly yielding little notes cherry cola.

Taste: Store-brand cola and a sweet thin drizzle of simple syrup for the pils malt. A dark fruitiness and decaying grass clippings introduces a sudden and surprising alcoholic harshness, which sort of embodies the taste in the cruelly long finish.

Mouthfeel: Medium-thin body. Medium carbonation.

Overall: No need to make any excuses for this, as it’s just a rather poor example of the style. I didn’t finish the bottle, I couldn’t finish it. I got 99 problems but a Bischoff ain’t one.

Malty and sweet. Hints of nuts and caramel. Smooth finish. Rather good overall, but not outstanding.

Dark amber with a light head and no lace. Decent caramel malt and light chocolate moves to a warm semi-sweet malt finish. A little light and watery, but drinkable.
