Pours almost black with mahogany brown edges when held toward the light, thin tan head forms leaves speckled lacing left behind. Fair retention. Aromatics full of roasted dark chocolate and coffee notes from the dark roasted malt profile utilized here. This is weird, but also a hint of watermelon. Light, herbal, hop profile. Texture is light, watery, and slippery (again, like watermelon juice). Very low carbonation. Finish is like a milk stout with some sourness. No unpleasant detractors in the aftertaste. A nice stout.

Some sharp bitter chocolate with a hint of roast. OK head and lacing. Black pour. Light bitter finish. Palate is pretty straight forward here, not a lot of complexity. Bottle.

Few years ago I brewed a few batches of beer, the first one was a Chocolate Stout where the owner of a brew store helped me with the bottling and fermented it in his stand in fridge. Long story short, that was the best of the 3 or 4 that I brewed...came out something like 8% and very well-balanced. Bisonís stout has been the closest Chocolate Stout that reminded me of that brew. Wasnít as strong, but the taste was sweet and semi-hoppy. What really dissapointed me though, was that after I decided that this is a beer that I really like, I canít find it anymore. They usually have their Golden Ale, but for some reason the Chocolate Stout isnít distributed here anymore. Updated 6/21/09: Just found a 6íer of this at Whole Foods- Aventura, FL. Was going to buy a bomber in Orlando next month while on vacation to try again, so just went ahead and bought a 6 now. This beer wasnít as good as I had originally remembered....as the last time I tried it was maybe late 2007. There seemed to be a little less flavor this time, mouthfeel was a bit rusty, slightly bitter flavor with a sweet chocolate finish. Little bit of a mocha head, but not much. Still a decent choco-stout, but wouldnít say itís closer to 4 like my original review. Probably will go with Rogueís Choco or Lost Coastís 8-Ball Stout next time around.

Pours dark brown, with an ample tan head. Aroma of cocoa and malt. Taste is of a dry stout, with slight notes of chocolate. This one is a nice íforeigní stout, but it is far less complex, with much lower abv than an imperial. Still, thumbs up.

UPDATED: APR 30, 2015 12 oz. bottle from Whole Foods. Nose of dark chocolate and roasted barley. Taste of black coffee and bittersweet cocoa. Carbonation is spritzy and refreshing. Finish is semi bitter and toasty. Extra points for the awesome balance; lots of flavor, dry finish and mild bitterness make this very drinkable. Outstanding.

Old rating. Black pour with tan head. Chocolate, earthy presence, hop bite, detracted as it a bit metallic and minerally, not horrible.

12 oz bottle shared at Cafe Spice in Truckee. Black appearance with a light tan head. Chocolate, roasted malts, coffee, mild earthy hop bitterness and light sweetness. Medium body with a smooth, creamy feel and a dry finish. Tasty.

Poured from a 12 OZ bottle into a pint glass at a TacoMac in Douglasville, GA. Aroma- Big malt aroma, real good aroma. Appearance- Black with a small tan colored head. Taste- Nice faint chocolate flavor with roasted malt. Palate- This is a medium bodied beer with mild carbonation. it has an oily texture that fits the flavor. Overall- A nice flavored stout for me. I really enjoyed this brew.

This is my favorite stout to get when I can find it at a local store :) Itís so chocolatey but at the same time the bitterness of it balances very well. It doesnít run sweet thankfully like some of the chocolate brews Iíve had. The head is creamy and it has a nice toasty aftertaste. Itís one of the most balanced brews Iíve found :)

12 oz. bottle, pours black with a small tan head. Nose is subtle, with notes of dry bitter cocoa and light roastiness. Flavour is along the same lines, featuring a dry palate of bitter dry cocoa and medium roasted malt. Pretty gentle and smooth -- could use a thicker mouthfeel and a rounder flavour profile, but for a "smaller" stout, this is quite nice.

color is black with almost no lacing. Aroma is straight forward roasty malts. Taste is kind of neutral with a very dry finish. In fact the bulk of this beer is the finish, which is pleasantly dry, but doesnít make up for a lack of anything remotely interesting taste wise. Itís pretty boring actually. I wouldnít drink this again.
