Deep amber brown with a small off-white head. Aroma is of wood and old raisins. Taste is of raisin bread and malt. Smooth, but flavor is rather weak.

2006 vintage. In the bomber bottle from John’s Market in Portland. Pours a darks purple-brown with a fizzy and quickly dying brown head. The aroma is huge with vanilla, raisins and strong acetone. The flavor is big, without having a thick body. Big raisins all the way. The high alcohol burns on the way down. Good, but not legendary.

UPDATED: FEB 2, 2009 Sorry to be a deviant here, but I thought this was an excellent beer. Pours dark brown with an off-white head. Great sweet, complex dark fruit aroma. Taste is dark malt, chocolate, grapes, raisins, some spices. Full-bodied and smooth mouthfeel. A good one.

Vintage 2006. Nose is very fruity, like raisiny, sweet with clovey spices, and vanilla hints; Hazy rusty red with a small beige head; flavor has raisin pie, yeast, and some light hop bitterness, along with some light peppery spices
3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 SoLan (1550) - Florida, USA - AUG 1, 2008
Dark amber/ruby with a small, off white head. Rich aroma of dark fruits, sweet and bready malt, and some candi sugar. Same flavors, rich and with a bit of warmth. Full/medium body, balanced. Nice, strong winter brew.

Pours dark brown, with a small off white head. Smells of sweet dark fruits, grapes, and candy sugar. The flavor is of sweet dark fruits and bitter candy sugar. Grapes, figs, and plums seem to be the most noticeable characters detected in the flsvor. Palatable and easy drinking for 9%, decent masking of the alcohol. Not great, but drinkable.

2.1 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 8/20 ross (1943) - weddington, North Carolina, USA - MAY 24, 2008
2006 Bottle. Pours out a brown color without much of a head. Smell is sweet, spicy, and has some raisins in it. The taste is sweet, and really, like eating a raisin. Over carbonated, too sweet, no balance, pretty much a mess. It reminded me of Ommegang - but only in appearance and mouthfeel. Kind of like if unibroue was to brew Raison d’ Etre and add a turd to the mix. My least favorite beer of the weekend last week.
