3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20 Walt (2448) - Austin, USA - JUL 23, 2005
UPDATED: AUG 14, 2005 Pour is nice ruby amber with a dense thin off white head...smell is malty and doughy combined with some citrusy (orange) hops...taste is a tad sweet at first changing with strong hop bitterness all the way through the finish...
2 weeks later, perhaps a different keg:
Same appearance, nose was a little toasty with tons of malt, bread, dough...sweet and generic tasting with a lack of hops...finish is metallic and sweet with some sort of vegetal bitterness too...

Tap. Mild nutty seltzer water. Mildly thin. Not a whole lot going on here. Nicely done and true to style, but what’s the point? Not mind blowing by any stretch of the imagination.

Cloudy brown. Aroma is faint malt. Taste is a soured malt that doesn’t give the drinker much to work with. Not a bad beer, but it does need some work.

Nice malty-ness. Poor waitress told me this was a brown ale, but I have to admit, it is closer to a brown then an amber. Fairly tasty though.

On draught. I don’t remember having this beer before but now I want it back more often. It is a great beer made to an English Red sort of style. The color is orange/amber and clear with nice lacing. The aroma is really nice with hops and malt. The flavor is really delicious with a great mix of sweetness, caramel, and hop bitterness and flavor. Maybe Target hops??? :-) Excellent beer that you will want again.

Beautiful, slightly murky red with some head and good lacing. Nice bright malt body with earthy and herbal notes in the nose. Very balanced malt wit h earthy tones. Very nice and drinkable beer.

Tap. Funny thing, I’m always talking about how BE has brewed every style under the sun, and yet I actually can’t think of the last time when I’ve had a simple red/amber ale from here. Slightly thick, very malt-dominated. Smooth, and are those faint chocolate malts that I taste? Could probably go with any type of food, agreeable and neutral but not exceptional.

Had on tap at the Bitter End. Pours a dark orange with a frothy white head and excellent thick lacing. Aroma has a brief appearance of floral notes and some underlying citrusy notes. Flavor has some earthy notes underlying the citrusy bitterness. Some traces of nuttiness as well. Smooth mothfeel starting off, but metallicizes near the end. Not bad, just not one of BE’s best.
