RBAG - Bottle - Pours clear black, with a thin off-white head, and spotty lacing. Nose is ashy, with spruce, black chocolate, graphite, mocha. Flavours are again quite ashy, with nice spice, chocolate, and juniper berries. A solid Black IPA, no complaints here...

RBAG Summer Session 2012. Very dark brown with an unapologetic hop aroma. Usual suspects of citrus, pine and grapefruit. Malts show through a bit. Taste is similar with the roasted malt character asserting itself. Real nice bitterness to the brew and the balance suits my tastes well. Enjoyed this brew.

RBAG summer 2012. From a 650ml brown bottle. Deep dark brown pour, tan head with good creaminess, sticky lace. Roasty nose, black coffee. Taste is big on coffee, roasty dark malts. Some hops in the finish and lasting roast notes. Good drinkability.

UPDATED: MAY 26, 2014 Bomber from Brewforia. Good to be #10! Pours very dark brown with a frothy 3 finger light tan head. Mild cat piss aroma. Med body. Strong cat piss, aka citrus, flavor over some slightly burnt malt. It’s so hoppy it’s astringent - or maybe that’s the burnt malt. Cleans the nasal passages - good stuff. Good stuff on repeat.

Bottle. Everything about this brew makes it the best offering yet from the Bitter Root Brewing Company, from the label art to the beer itself. Hazy dark brown with a light brown head that laces the glass nicely. Aroma is very piney and fresh, and given time, some chocolates notes come forward. Fresh piney foresty hops steal the show, with dark malts underlying. Solid bitter finish. Excellent!

Very dark brown color. Grapefruity, roasted malts, a touch of mocha in the nose. The mouth has tons of roasted malts with great dark fruit character with just some minor note of citrus. Full bodied, excellent balance. Very enjoyable. Light bitter finish with lingering citrus.

Black oily pour. Dense lousous head. Amazing pine, citrus and plume nose. Great attack and long lingering finish.

Bottle - very dark brown pour with a modest creamy brown head. Aroma of florals and light roast. Tastes heavier with roast and finishes clean with floral bitters. Nice transition between the dark roast and the floral hops. Good.

Solid black with some yeast chunks, frothy, big, creamy brown head. Aroma of roast malt, light coffee, floral and resinous hops. Taste has bitterness from burnt malt and hops, solid malt body. It seems like I’ve been having a lot of good Black IPA’s in the last few months and each time I think, "Wow, this is the best Black IPA I’ve had." I can honestly say, THIS is the best Black IPA I’ve ever had. It is perfectly balanced, there is a lot of coffee/burnt malt taste, but it doesn’t mask the hops at all. Same for the hops, they are bold and vibrant, but they do not conflict with the creamy malty body and burnt flavor. I will be buying more of this next time I see it.

On tap at brews on Washington in Spokane A: black, finger of tan foam, abysmal. Looks appropriate. Rings of lace. (3.5) S: coffee, citrus, resin, oats, robust porter like nose. A little hollow through the middle with soily, dry finish. (3) T: dry and muddled with coffee tones and nutty suggestions. Hops are bitter with some fruity and resiny notes. The juxtaposition of the profiles is a hare off. (3) M: full bodied with a little too much carb. Slick finish. (2.5) O: needs some tweaking, but a decent effort. (3)
