Pours a transparent dark mahogany with a wispy-lacing tan head. Aroma of dry smoky malts with some roasty notes. Body starts lightly sweet and thinner with a hint of tartness and smoky character before a watery semi-tart light fruity finish. Needs more body and sweetness.

Sampled at an esbls tasting. A lot of red in the dark hue. A ring for a head. A very smoky nose with a bit of meat. This could be a rauch. Smoky and meaty flavor. Some ash. This is probably close to being authentic to the roots of the style but that style has been improved upon.

Bottle from a Bozeman grocery store. Nice roasty malt and a little more roasty than what I am used to with a straight porter. Chocolate flavors and creamy milk texture. Bittersweet coffee finish. All together this reminds more of a light stout or a full bodied imperial porter. Good character and presence for the style.
