Bitter Root Brewing brews this rich dark ale with a hint of smoke flavor as a salute to English brewers long forgotten.

Aggressive pour displayed a thin eggshell head sitting atop a thin brown beer. Not much to describe. Both the nose and flavor were unpleasantly sweet. Unfortunately, there is also a sour quality in the finish that lingers.

Bottle. Pours an extremely dark brown color with a fairly thick tan head on it. Nose is quite sour and more than a little bitter there. Taste is a little sour, actually, and definitely bitter. Too harsh for me.

Aroma: roasted malts, coffee. Appearance: pours a bark brown with a mostly diminishing tan head and minor lacing. Taste: roasted malts, meaty, bitter coffee and smoky notes and a nice hop bitter finish. Mouthfeel: medium bodied moderate carbonation. Overall: a very enjoyable porter. Nice combination of roastiness and bitterness. Would drink again. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

22 oz. bottle- Pours dark brown to black with some transparency and a nice creamy tan head. The aroma is roasted malts, coffee, peat moss, some ash. The taste is the same, only more robust and the coffee really shines, there is some subtle smoke in there which is very welcome. The body is medium light, carbonation is medium high. Overall I don’t know what the mediocre scores are all about, I thought it was pretty solid.

It poured a dark brown color with a tan head. The aroma was nice roasted malts and some coffee tones. The taste was strong coffee, bittersweetness, roasted malt, and a little smokey. A decent Porter.

Sampled at an esbls tasting. A lot of red in the dark hue. A ring for a head. A very smoky nose with a bit of meat. This could be a rauch. Smoky and meaty flavor. Some ash. This is probably close to being authentic to the roots of the style but that style has been improved upon.

Bottle from a Bozeman grocery store. Nice roasty malt and a little more roasty than what I am used to with a straight porter. Chocolate flavors and creamy milk texture. Bittersweet coffee finish. All together this reminds more of a light stout or a full bodied imperial porter. Good character and presence for the style.

tawny brown. dusty milk powder yeast and dark caramel malt nose with soapy, metallic, spicy phenols. somewhat twangy and spicy flavor up front; phenols running wild. burnt dark caramel chewiness and sweetness throughout with fizzy carbonation and high acid. mostly unpleasant and dirty throughout.

Pours black with à tan head. The aroma is roasty with chocolate, coffee, and spice. The flavor is simple, straight for forward. Chocolate, flint, ash, coffee and spice. Not bad at all.

Bottle. Pours clear reddish-brown, medium to thin off-white head, great lacing. Nose is malted milk balls, hazelnuts, smells like a Kinder Bueno, light roast coffee, very creamy aroma, with toasted nuts and cocoa powder. Flavours are light and smooth, nice nuttiness, meaty bitterness, short finish. Alright.
