The word for "double" in German is Doppel, thus a Doppelbock is a big beer. This dark, malty lager features complex flavors ranging from caramel to chocolate. Smooth yet robust this beer is sure to warm you up as the temperature drops.

Great doppelbock. I had this on tap at the brewery. It has strong chocolate notes with light caramel background.

The version I sampled was an 8.0% ABV version that they served in a 12 oz glass. Claimed that they could not serve it in a pint glass because of the higher ABV. Whatever. Thin head with good carbonation. Bit surprised at the decent carbonation. Light roasted malt aroma with a hint of spices. Color is a very dark brownish red. Flavor is quite smooth and clean with more malts and a decent alcohol warming which was nice because it was about 55 degrees inside the building. Slightly sweet (caramel) with a pretty clean finish. A decent dopplebock.

UPDATED: JAN 3, 2011 Bursting with malty goodness. Thick rocky white head, reddish brown in color and nearly opaque. Aroma shows chocolate, earthy hops, and butterscotch.. Not overly sweet for a Doppelbock. High warming quality in the swallow. Starts of with light earthy hops, malt sweetness builds, then ends on a sweet grassy note. The spiciness of the beer does not hit until mid glass. Best served in a snifter.
