COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
BJ’s Abbey Normal® is what the Belgian’s call a Dubbel (or Double Ale), which is the most popular style of Abbey Ale. This historic beer style is traditionally brewed by Trappist Monks in Belgium. A full-bodied, light brown ale with a fruity flavor profile, the unique bouquet of fruit and spice comes from fermentation with an authentic Trappist yeast.

On draft at BJ’s Pearland. I was surprised to see this offered and didn’t expect much. Poured opaque caramel brown with decent tan head. Fruity malty apples, pear, and creamy mouthfeel with some spices of nutmeg or clove in there. Smooth finish. Decent, although I didn’t order a second one.

This should not be compared to the Trappist Monks. It fell short. It was kind of bland.

I too was hoping for a dubbel as good as BJs tripel-style Grand Cru - but this one missed the mark. Hard to tell what "notes" it had because it was served too cold. As it lost its superchill the Belgian character started to come through a little but overall this was a disappointment.

Maybe I’m just more impressed with BJ’s brews than most folks, but I liked this quite a bit. I had it at BJ’s in Houston. It’s a Belgian double ale, and the placard on the table said that it’s brewed with traditional Trappist yeast. All I know for sure is that it tastes great. It’s full bodied and cloudy, it has a wine-like aroma, and a hearty, rich taste with tones of apples and spice.

On tap at the Huntington Beach location. It pours amber with a khaki head. The aroma has some fruit basket and hard candy. The flavor is fruity with notes of raisin bread, toffee, apples and a bit of an alcoholic finish. Typical American interpretation of the style.

Citrus Park, FL - on tap at BJs. Murky dark orange pour, off-white head, bit of lacing. Brown sugar aroma, hint of black licorice. Flavor has some candied sugar notes, a bit of toffee sweetness, some toffee, back end of dates. Overall tastes like liquid bread pudding. Sticky mouthfeel. Not bad at all.

Chestnut pour with a razor thin eggshell head. Aroma of caramel, honey, roasted nuts, Belgian yeast and spice. Candied almonds, vanilla cinnamon, an caramel are all there. Really solid beer from an unsuspecting place.

Pours a reddish brown copper color with aroma of mild fruit and spice. Taste is lightly spice, almost pumpkin in flavor. A light tasting beer with alittle complex flavor. Overall a nice tasting beer.

On tap at bjs Allen. Pours a muddy orange with a thin off white head. The aromas are dough, very light citrus. The kouthfeel is watery and a little bready with a light body and medium carbonation. Cheers!
