I am not a huge fan of BJ’s beers, but I like the place - it is nice, convenient, and has good food. So, it’s a crowd pleaser although perhaps not a beer destination. That said, I found this beer to be pretty good. It is certainly not an Imperial Stout that is going to challenge the giants of this style (it’s not Dark Lord or Darkness of Speedway Stout), but for what it is, I thought it was pretty good.
This beer comes in a pint, and has a rich thick head. Aroma is pretty roasty, but otherwise wasn’t really all that notable. Flavor was some sweet roastiness with a really soft and creamy mouthfeel. It seemed more like a higher-ABV breakfast stout to me more than it was an Imperial Stout. Nonetheless, I was pleasantly surprised.
In future visits to BJ’s, I’d have this beer again.

On draft at the Huntington Beach location. It pours dark brown with a cream colored head. The aroma has light notes of coffee. The flavor just isn’t there. Mildly astringent with some toffee and coffee but with all kinds of off flavors. Mostly diacetyl. Kind of unpleasant. I would not recommend this BJs. A lot of the beers here had the same problems.

UPDATED: MAY 9, 2012 Black with a thin tan head. Tastes of alcohol and coffee. A little thin as far as imperials go but worth the price and worth a try

Remarkably light for a stout, there is a nice head and good level of roasted flavor coming through.

Served in a pilsener glass on tap. Heada fingertip tall, dark brew with some slight shine through. Leaves choppy lacing. Taste is chocolate with citrus hops, watered down but still slightly boozy for a stout. Good but not great.

I’ve never been to a brewpub especially a chain brewery that had an imperial stout as part of their full-time lineup so props to them. Mildly chocolately and smoke flavors but very underwhelming and watery. Hides 8.5% quite well. I was surprised to see there is that much alcohol in this.
3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 monk191 (102) - California, USA - JAN 22, 2012
A decent stout. Pours a black with tan head. Taste is strong, a little too carbonated for a stout. Nice finish. Had on tap.

Served a pilsner glass at BJ’s Austin Arborwalk locale- Served a very darkened brown that just didn’t let the light through, minimal lacing from the faded brown head .4mm in size, aroma of a roasted malt and some dark chocolate. Hits the mouth with a high-medium body, malt is definately there but seems restrained for the style, middle has a small hop presence, finish is smooth and has some chocolate. Didn’t notice the alcohol at all. But if it’s named after a buffalo, EVERYTHING should be bold.
