3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 Stine (1398) - St. Paul, USA - AUG 31, 2007
Pours thinly to a dark chocolate brown. Some amber glow rests at the bottom. Aroma of a sugary chocolate syrup and rum. Bold hazelnut richness and a wink of dark Pinot jam at the end. Taste is very slightly hot – some iron and aluminum. Very dirty in a favorable, earthy way. Plenty of peat, woody honey and maple syrups – a solid, authentic form of sweetness. From a rich beginning, the palate hollows out progressively the warmer it gets. Warm milk coating the mouth. Generally medium bodied. Fairly flawed execution, but a good design. Thanks for sharing, Aaron!

Tricky beer to rate; it looks like a porter, but it smells like a brown ale and tastes like one too. So if we’re rating it as a brown ale, it’s a pretty acceptable beer for the style and easily the best in the taster I had. But as a porter it would be a miserable failure, so I am rating it as a beer and saying it is good enough.

I like this brewing company, even though they seem to get bashed by folks on this site. This beer pours as black as can be. A little light on the carbonation, but the head is easily resurrected. I would call it a sufficient porter taste, but nothing explosive and exciting in tastes. I could see much more coming from a porter. Although I recommend the black demon stout, as lame as that name is, it is decent beer from this brewery. Support Your Local Breweries!

22oz bottle, courtesy of argo0. Thanks, Aaron! Looked like a porter (I forgot to take appearance notes!). Strange, bitter chocolate and cocoa aroma; a bit milky and green. Very roast-dominated mouthfeel, even a bit charred; medium feel, with plenty of dark chocolate and cocoa plus a green coffee note; mildly acrid and overly non-hoppily bitter. A bit rough. Medium, bitter chocolate and cocoa powder finish.
