Bottle from BierKonig. Chestnut colored. Tannish head. Sugar and molasses aroma. Flavor is rich and malty but an overwhelming sugar presence throws this off. Syrupy and bordering on sickly sweet.

Pours jet black with a creamy brown head, good lace and retention. Aroma of coffee, chip fat and cheap scotch. The beer is very smooth in the mouth until some funny flavours come through... it took me a while to put my finger on it, but there was definitely phenolic flavours of Salicylic acid, other than that there is some weak roast malt and raw alcohol. Finish is slightly phenolic and alcoholic, pretty ordinary.

Ĺ liter bottle. Dark brown body with a quickly dissipating tan head. Prune, brown sugar, malt and alcohol nose. Wet palate is supplemented with a dry alcohol bite. Raisinettes. Not very smooth and not a very good porter. However, for $4/liter, it provides a quality drunk with a 9.4% ABV.

Not really sure what is going on here... pours black and lovely with small tan head... looks promising. Shall I sniff it? Pray tell, why does this smell like fermented wheat and shoe polish? Fermented chocolate covered cherries as well. Something lactic as hell and sour and wrong is going on in this aroma. Something also alluring trying to fight its way to the surface, but overall this is just badness. Surely this is infected? Drainpour and bummer.

Did anyone else smell mushroom here? Anyone? I got mushroom. Plus some soy, mixed in with coffee and burnt toast. Not really a pleasent aroma. Luckily it tasted a bit better than it smelled, but still a weird mix of flavors - soy, black tea, red wine. Odd beer.

Bottle from Daniel. Pours out a black color with a tan head. Smell is sweet and full of chocolate and dark roasted malts. Taste is sweet - too sweet - with a little punch of alcohol. Not something I would want to have again.

Strong European malt flavor..Quite pronounced. Alc presence is medium strong. Medium dark malt flavor. Full body throughout. Grainy European malt flavor stands out.

UPDATED: MAR 8, 2014 Bottle. Dark brown, but not quite inky, with a thin brown head. Aroma is sweet, but in a way that isnít entirely appealing, cola-ish with caramel and dark fruits. Tootsie Rolls! That;s what Iím getting here! And Iím not crazy about it. The palate is much the same, more caramel, very little roast, and with a dusty, flinty dryness in the finish. Just okay.

Bottle at RBESG Grand Tasting, August 2005. Nearly black, with a ruby tinge. Strong Baltic Porter character, with licorice and tar, some tart fruit and very noticeable volatile alcohol in the aroma. But is shockingly sweet and, coupled with the alcohol burn, this makes for a very odd mouthfeel indeed. Like surgical spirit mixed with cassis and treacle - more like a medicinal tincture than a beer. Rather crude. Not really my thing.

Appearance: Dark burgundy with virtually no head or lacing
Aroma: Dark fruits, caramel
Taste: Sweet malts, dark fruits & caramel. The finish is grainy and sweet
The alcohol is well hidden. Not bad, but I probably wouldnít order a second pint if I was at a bar.
