Dray Horse Ale: To represent the robust nature of this symbolic work animal, Black Creek has selected a full bodied, rich brown ale, brewed using both Ontario grown hops and malt. This flavourful ale is perfectly suited to the Fall & Winter season.

Very dark brown but clear pour with a small amount of white head that basically just ringed the glass. Really nice fresh field like scent. Farm like without the manure. For whatever reason it smells wholesome and inviting. Really dig this smell. Nice and easy to drink. Warming and nutty. A bit sweet. Easy to drink with low carbonation. I know most beer aficionados would kill me for this but I’m enjoying this significantly more than the Russion Gun Imperial Stout. A fine beer. Cool to see it’s a "Historic Beer of Canada" as well. Patriotism in a bottle :D Wish I had bought more.

Found in Ottawa. Somewhere. Pours with a pitch-brown body and a modest head on top, foggy, little visible carbonation. Aroma is wet barley and mash, like a maltina non-alc, certainly not encouraging. Flavour is a spicy barley mix, no complexity, simple barley water with a hint of pizzazz on the back end. Sadly there’s no complexity to this, just a watery pile of barley, but nonetheless still drinkable.

Bottle: Poured a clear medium brown color ale with a large foamy head with good retention and minimal lacing. Aroma consists of dry caramel malt with light grainy notes. Taste is also dominated by some dry caramel malt with some notes of grainy cereal. Body is about average with good carbonation. Run of the mill brown ale with dry cereal notes.

I found this beer enjoyable as I usually do with beers from Black Creek Brewery. Not that extra strong punch of taste that some people might be looking for but it is enjoyable enough. Good session beer to.

Bottle from the brewery. Pours a clear deep brown/black with nearly no white head. Smell is super sweet brown sugar and nothing else. Palate is light bodied with average carbonation. Taste is bland at first then gets a sweet kick that lingers and dissipates over time. One note that’s not great, but it’s not objectively bad..

pours clear copper-light brown with a very small light beige head, little retention. caramel malts, cheap almost burnt cereals, some nuttiness, minerals, metallic notes, peppery-spicy, some chocolate and toffee. soft carbonation, light body, slightly harsh grassy finish. DP.

Pours like dark earth in a glass. More honest than most. Maybe not not as hip then the last beer you had but that’s probably why it’s good.

bottle. Pours dark brown, zero head, looks more like a cola than a beer. Aroma is nice; light roast, some vanilla, wood/earth. Very thin palate, the taste has some sweet sugar and raisin notes to go with the burnt/roast. Decent.

(bottle) clear brown colour with a small brown head; aromas of vanilla, roast; dry, pleasant flavour with a long light bitter finish; thin palate; more like a dry stout than a brown ale; nice

Bottle from the LCBO. Ruby-brown with a thin but fairly healthy looking tan head. Aroma is nice - toasted nuts, bit of raisin, brown sugar (very slightly burnt), a hint of dried leaves. Flavour follows, with the toasted nuts being quite prominent, along with some dry cocoa, a suggestion of tart blackcurrant, and a subtly hopped finish. Body is a bit thinner than I normally like for the style, but still OK. Not the most thrilling beer - a bit workmanlike, really - but given the name, perhaps that’s fitting.

Pours dark brown. Some hops and some but aroma with coffee. A little heAD, no lacing. Finishes bitter. Bottle.
