Black Death Beer has a pitch black colour and light brown creamy head. Aroma is roasted malt with strong notes of coffee and chocolate. Sweet spicy flavour with smoky aftertaste. It was launched in Iceland in 2011 and has been very well received, especially among younger beer drinkers (20-30 year old). Black Death is a brand owned by Valgeir Sigurðsson, an Icelandic native who launched vodka and snaps lines under this brand in the eighties with great success in many markets. The brand became famous when Slash, the famous guitar player of Guns ‘n’ Roses became an aficionado.

Pours black with medium lasting head. Aroma is sweet, caramel, sugar, some dark bread, dried fruits, mead. Aroma is quite strong. Taste is watery, some metal, burned sugar, coffee with a lot of milk, grainy, whole-grain bread, some pie. Carbonisation disturbs a little. Light, watery but easily to drinkable.

Bottle from a Vínbúdin in Reykjavik. Pour mahogany with a good frothy cream head. Mild sweet molasses aroma. The taste is roasty with liquorice coming through increasingly in the lingerig finish. Pleasant, but lacks a bit of oomph.

33 cl bottle @ home. Bottled 11.03.2015, BBE 11.03.2017
Aroma has cocoa and sweet syrupy tones. Flavour has licorice, sweet syrupy tones, molasses and mild ashy notes. Faint traces of metal in the finish with mild grapefruity hoppiness. Sweet, yet balanced. Feels slightly thin but still pleasant.

Bottle at the NYE tasting in Beerville pub in Belgrade-Serbia, 31/12/2015. Pours black color, little off-white (brownish) head. Nose: a bit smoked, dry meat, background notes of molasses and caramel. Mouth: it mirrors the nose in taste, completely. It can pair BBQ’s but not much my palate.

Robe brune dense, mousse peu abondante. Nez assez complexe entre chocolat, café, malt torréfié et notes fumées et épicées. Bouche à l’attaque tendue; assez droite et nette, rétro épicée et fumée et finale sèche. Un Porter épicé et raffraîchissant.

Chocolate, malt, herbal, slight coffee and toasty aroma. Black with short lasting head. Medium sweetness and light bitterness. Finish of chocolate and coffee. Average carbonation, medium body, a bit oily texture. A proper icelandic dark beer!

Denne mørke islandske øl har et meget sort udseende med et tyndt, men tykt, hvidt skum. Øllen bærer præg af chokolade og lakrids smag. Desuden er den meget sød og cremet. En god mørk øl med medium karbonering.
