We didnít want this to be Jagged Edge on steroids. Thus rather than using the same hop combination, we chose more fruit forward hops to balance out the alcohol in the beer. The medium crystal malt adds a very subtle color and sweetness. Nugget and Millenium hops are used to bitter. Citra is a new variety to the market that has some similar properties to Simcoe but a more pleasant fruitiness; pineapple/mango aromas mixed in with pine and catís pee. Centennial brings candied orange and Amarillo adds big grapefruit. The liquid in the fermenter is dry-hopped three times- each dry hop equal in weight to the dry hop of Jagged Edge. This multi-stage dry hopping is meant to layer the different hop aromas. The beer is fermented cool to suppress fusel alcohol development, and dextrose is added to allow it to attenuate out highly, leaving very little residual sugar. The idea was to avoid that syrupy "gumsmacker" effect thatís sometimes found in Imperial IPAs. Other than barrel aged beers, this is by far our most labor intensive and expensive beer to make. Rampage fans are legion and we believe they deserve nothing less than the very best we can give them.

Big delicious Double. Excellent lace, nice hazy orange. Beautiful beer. Damn good. Malty, creamy, grainy, perfection. Super grapefruit beer. Grapefruit rind through out. I just had Brew Dog Hardcore IPA and Rampage wins hands down. Super super delicious from beginning to end.

UPDATED: DEC 13, 2010 Awesome beer. Itís not the most pungent DIPA, but the hop notes are strong enough and come through with some very nice aromas. It smells like a mix of tangerine rind, pineapple and pine needles. It even picks up some apricot and grapes, as it warms. Itís a sweetly citric, inviting aroma. And the taste is almost better. The sweetness is quite light; not much crystal malt flavor here. The finish is dry and almost perfectly bitter, in that itís strong but never drowns out the hop notes. The aftertaste is a very long-lasting pine resin hoppiness. Mouthfeel is happily dominated by hop oiliness. Appearance is a light copper with a creamy head, white tinged with yellow. Kudos to Black Diamond for another step in the right direction.

Bomber. Small, off-white head becomes a ring, leaves some lace. Body is a deep honey color, hazy. Aroma honey-sweet and heavily hopped--floral, herbal, white pepper, pollen, a touch of citrus and a shot of nice smelling pine, like a fresh-cut Christmas tree. Palate is fullish with coarse carbonation--not much, as guessed by the minimal head--and on the dry side, if sticky. Flavor is fairly neutral to slightly sweet up front, muted sugar, citrus and almost fruity flavors moving into a woody, neutral top, and then settling long and steady into a very bitter finish. Astringent, oily, flavor of hop oil, somewhat pungent, pine, a very sharp grapefruit rind flavor on the finish. Long finish, coating my whole mouth and making my lips feel like thereís too much Carmex on them...itís almost waxy, yet still astringent b/c of the severe IBUís...interesting for sure. Definitely enjoy the big bitterness and sharp grapefruit, but this beer is pretty rough and not as tasty as most other 2IPAís. Alcohol is very well masked/integrated, only evident in the harshness of the beer. This stuff is raucous!

Nice nose of grapefruit, honey, and some pine. Flavor is resinous, very hoppy, but a tad watery. Seems kinda thin for a double ipa. Medi bitter finish with a weak citrus aftertaste.

Pours cloudy amber with a decent beige head and a fruity aroma. There is a slightly harsh smoked malt flavor with a carbonated puckeringly bitter finish. Not well balanced, but still pretty drinkable.

All bitterness, no flavor. Itís a lot like a íIBU heavyí IPA without the floral and grassy hop notes. Finishes clean with that back biting bitter that hits the back of your throat.
